@GeetaKashyap wonderful article on depression and ways to cope with it. Getting out of depression is not easy. Generally society looses trust in them. Very few beat the odds and emerge as an attempt survivor. I have witnessed their struggles. Wish the society was more understanding.

A very helpful article and this should be one of the articles on the top list of this forum so that it doesn’t get buried in few months down the road.

great article Geeta... awareness is important for the person who is suffering with depression and also family and friends to give good support. unfortunately in many families the emotional ups and downs and tantrums by depressed person are not understood but starts judging the behavior , we are all humans , yes we have up and downs, we have to get the awareness that it can happen to anybody and thus understand each other and support each other.

Thank you, Lakshmi, for the concerns expressed. The society blindly tags all mental illnesses as madness and the fear of relapse keeps society away from such people. Sadly, this alienates the patients and prevents their easy integration into the society.

Well said, @skalluri. Awareness is the key to manage smaller issues by ourselves. For the more serious issues, even as the patient and the family work in tandem with the professionals, we as the neighbours and friends can be more sympathetic and help as needed.

Excellent compilation! That's quite a comprehensive take on understanding and coping with mild depression and low spirits. You've really put a lot of effort into it. There is little to add to your thorough list besides the suggestion that staying mentally healthy ought to be taught at the school level similar to the way we focus on physical education. Children these days are growing up with a highly unique and unprecedented set of societal stressors. Early and relentless exposure via social media and an overload of information makes them susceptible to emotional distress and impulse control issues of the kind the previous generations never had to face. Teaching them to critically evaluate their thinking, regulate emotions and tolerate distress via meditation and cognitive reframing techniques should become a standard part of the curriculum. It will help build a generation of young adults who will not only be more resilient in the face of day to day setbacks but also be more empathetic towards their peers with serious mental health challenges.

    Today's Mumbai Mirror news report.

The report in today's Mumbai Mirror is indeed shocking. What is happening to today's youth? It is sad that a small setback is enough to drive our youth along the narrow path to hell. Parents and teachers MUST speak to our youngsters about the importance of patience, hard work, a positive attitude to move on in the face of difficulties (never give up) and resilience, whenever possible. The decreasing size of families, the extreme importance given by the parents to fulfil every single wish of the child, lack of buffering areas in our society, consumerist attitudes, constant showoffs and comparisons due to ever active social media are all to be blamed for the misguided and hopeless attitudes of today's youth. Even parents are busy competing due to their professional and social ambitions; many times, they themselves lack the required attitude and wisdom. As a society, we should be a lot more compassionate and vigilant. My older article spoke about the need to have a tougher attitude to overcome frivolous setbacks and move on. There Is Life Beyond Failure!

    Dear @Gauri03,

Thanks for your invaluable feedback. I knew that you would raise a topical issue. A friend shared today's Mumbai Mirror news report (in the above post) and the details are shocking. A certain toughness in attitude, reverence to life and patience are all missing in these days of "2 minute instant noodles." A failure in an exam or an infatuation is enough to become addicts, lose the life or turn anti-social; children and even some adults have no idea about considering the bigger picture, having patience, resilience etc.

Wow, Geeta! This is what I call a labour of love. Am sure many of us will turn to this whenever we are feeling low and need to find a way of getting over those blues. I agree, those moments are short-lived. They are oh so familiar from having to endure hours of extreme pain when one wishes to end it all to waking up next morning feeling good about the sun shining and the feeling that God's in heaven and all is well with the world.
