    Punkaj Mullick was a path finder in film music. He was born in 1905 two years after my dad and died in 1978 two years after my dad! He was born and died in Calcutta. He was a Music Composer, singer and an actor. He had sung many of his own songs. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1970, followed by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (India's highest award in cinema, given by the Government of India) in 1972 for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. Classic music ran in his blood. An important turning point in his life came when, after finishing his studies, he came in contact with Dinendranath Tagore, who was Rabindranath's grand nephew. Soon Mullick became known as one of the leading exponents of Tagore's songs.
    He contributed in various capacities to Bengali, Hindi, Urdu and Tamil language films for 38 years, starting in 1931. I have seen quite a few movies in which he directed the music.
    I have great pleasure in presenting some of his songs.

    My all-time favourite sung by K.L.Saigal in Amar Saigal, a movie based on the life of Saigal himself.

    I'm happy to inform you that I came to know the beginning days of Hindi film music and "Pankaj Mulik" jee was the pioneer of new styles, new techniques in Hindi music. Thank you uncle for
    Introducing the legend music directors to us.
    I am reading Pankaj jee' s legacy and filmography ( Inhe Na Bhulana : Pankaj Mullick ) after reading your writing and listened a couple of his songs.
    I loved the song " So ja rajakumari" and added one more song to my collection but it wasn't from any movie.



    I have to listen his other songs too and will update . :)

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

    Thank you for taking us all down the memory lane, through this wonderful thread, reminding us of some of the great singers belonging to the 1930s and 40s. I had the opportunity of listening to Pankaj Mallik, CH Atma, Saigal and his likes, thanks to my neighbor who was a die hard fan of Radio Ceylon's 'Purani Filmon ka sangeet". Daily my morning sleep would be disturbed due to his radio being turned on to full volume, with Pankaj mallick singing 'Soja rajakumari soja '!

    Now, I know many first things which happened in hindi film,non film music through Pankaj jee and his milestones from link ( which I mentioned in my previous post). Me too like " aai aaj bahar aai and
    Adding couple of my favorites from Pankaj Jee 's composition .
    " Ye kaun aaya aaj savere savere " from Nartaki


    "Piya milan ko jaana" from kapal kundala and we can see Pankaj jee with Tambura in that song.

    Nice nostalgic songs. I remember a few and I enjoyed the video of Aayi Bahaar song with the 40's version of the train.:)

    Thank you for your first response. It is nice to see younger people showing interest in old songs. Pankaj Saab made Hindi movies take on the fast track in music. All that we are hearing now grew out of what he sowed. Your song selections show that you have started following Pankaj saab.

    Dear Agatha
    That 7.30 to 8 AM programme of Radio Ceylon! As I had stated elsewhere, this programme always ended with a Saigal song. We have something similar on Doordarshan on Sunday mornings but they do not travel too deep into the fast which is a pity. I am surprised to see the interest shown by younger generation in my musical travel down memory lane. Thank you for the lovely song that you have appended.

    Thanks for your sustained interest in my column.
    It reminds me of a song in the movie Ek Do Teen starring Motilal and the beautiful Meena Shorey in the lead roles in the early '50s. It's fun watching them flee in an old train. As the engine runs out of coal, they break the wooden compartments and use them as fuel!

    Yes Uncle, I have started to listening Pankaj jee's songs after reading your writing on him only. I usually like melodious and soothing music which I am not finding in recent years music. I stopped to checking new songs in Hindi and Telugu too from couple of years and started to searching more old awesome songs. I came to know many old gems through your musical series. Thank you.

    The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between. You have to listen to this song a million times to marvel at how Pankaj Mullick leads our listening from one word and note to the other. If you really focus on that, you will forget the next word of the song coming up even if you have heard it many times. The pause after each word, and the pause between the same word said twice or thrice. One of the few songs where a tribute sung decades later by another singer is as good as the original.

    The lyrics no less a gem by themselves. Not one word that will need a dictionary but oh what poetry with those simple words. Takes skill and something indescribable to use words like masti, chaman, garm saans, behki aankhen like that.
