    Hello,
As a mother of two daughters in their early and late teens, I would like to know how many grams of gold jewelry (or items) do the bride's parents give? I know there would be a huge variance, but just trying to get a good idea on the trend these days.
I don't remember exactly how many grams of gold jewelry my parents gave me, but I got 2 necklaces, a few pairs of earrings, a pair of regular bangles, a pair of slightly fancy bangles, a mangalyam chain with its accessories, and a pair of diamond earring. This was in the late 1990s.
Whenever I have visited the big jewelry stores (in Bangalore) the past few years, they are always packed with people buying. So I am wondering if indeed a lot of jewelry is given these days so I can start planning from now.
Thanks in advance for your time and input.

The numbers used to be 100 in those times when they were gloating about it; these days it's a lot subdued- maybe wealth levels surpassed to consider gold as a gift at all.

The young ones in my family circle aren't interested in jewellery and with the gender ratio favoring women and equality being the word, jewellery is more of a girl's personal desire than the standard accessories to be fitted before marriage.

Me thinks a good education that makes her financially independent is a better arsenal than gold and gifts.

PS: i terribly hate jewellers and my answer maybe biased.

Well it all depends on ones financial status and how much you can afford. Also depends on the guys side who may or may not demand.
I have seen cases where if 1 kg gold is given no matter if the gal is educated or not she gets many proposals !

It also depends on the community since in some communities it’s a must to give lots of gold and in some not mandatory .

If at all you are interested you can start collecting for both of them during their birthdays or every now and then to reduce the burden.

    Totally agree with @nemesis n @shravs3.

Gold is almost a meaningless investment with poor appreciation, today. But we still love it. Collecting in bits and pieces may be a nice idea to build your stock in any case. Beware of cheating by the jewellers; as lay persons we get cheated most often on the purity, weight and pricing.:(

It is possible that you are given 20-25 sovereigns (8 grams per sovereign).

Thank you all for the feedback. It has been very helpful.

Completely agree that in these days education is a top priority. Any kind of gold investment is only after making sure education expense is met. Plus the generation now a days like very light weight and fancy jewelry.

However, my situation is slightly different. We are settled outside India. My husband follows the policy - "No demand, no buy", i.e. unless I demand/pester for any piece of jewelry, he will not buy anything. In almost 20 years of marriage, on the two occasions I asked for jewelry, he agreed and bought.
He has a couple of rental properties in India, but I never know how much income was earned from it and how much is in the bank account there.
It so happened that I got a chance to visit India every year for the past 3 years. The first time I went, I bought some small pieces of jewelry for my kids. He never opposed it and readily paid for the jewelry from the money in India. I took advantage of that and the other two times, I bought small stuff like a lightweight necklace set of less than 15gms, etc. So in some sense I have started building up the items one by one whenever I can.
I just wanted to know in general what is the trend now a days. That way I can buy a little bit whenever I can.

Invest in gold bars so that you can buy jewelry later according to girls wish. I know someone who keeps buying gold every year for their daughters birthday. Personally I am not interested in any jewelry other than my basic everyday wear. Better to invest in their college fund which is skyrocketing these days.

    @HazelPup
Thanks for your input. It is a good idea. I also read on a different forum on this site that bars are preferable over coins if you want to convert to jewelry later.
