    Hello Ladies,

I am really frustrated hearing (from my MIL & husband ) that dal causes constipation ... my 2 and half years old baby is havinghard time pooping these days, she does this once in 3 days ..is it true that dal causes constipation ? We all know that dal is a good source of protein but not sure if it really causes indigestion. .please let me know your thoughts !

I don't think dal constipates, at the most it may create a bit of gas if the child is not able to digest. In such cases we generally add a bit of hing/ginger/ajwain depending on the family preference. To solve constipation issues increase vegetable, fruit and water content in baby's food. If the baby is not fond of chewing, ensure to add boiled and mashed bottlegourd, greens or carrots to food. They are sort of invisible and apart from providing nutrition they also increase the bulk of the stools as they are rich in fibres. Give bananas regularly. If I am not mistaken, adding ghee to food also improves motion apart from imparting some health benefits. Whenever my child suffered constipation I followed the above + I would give him half cup of warm water to which 1/2 tsp ghee was added.

Thanks Geeta! Do you think organic whole milk without boiling will cause constipation?

It might cause when u dont boil the milk. To be safe u can boil nd give her. And give her prune juice, garlic, more fruits and veggies. It will help.
And also make sure ur kid gets more physical activity.

it is not the protein that causes constipation. it is the lack of fiber. add a tomato, a a fist full of greens to the dal. add some fruits and vegges tomher diet.

and yes dairy can cause constipation sometimes. eliminate milk and give curds..

soak some raisins overnight and crush give the water in the morning helps..and
yes, give more water and keep her active. make her squat as a play.. bowel movements will regularise. start now so that a routine gets set by the time she starts school

Dal doesn’t cause constipation . It’s one of the best food you can give to your baby either as dal or khichdi so continue with that .

Whole milk could be the culprit so you can either water it down , switch to 2% or you can continue with whole milk but make sure you up his fiber intake in the form of fruits and veggies . Prune juice or raisin water helps if severely constipated .

Isn't milk always boiled before use? More/ very thick milk may cause constipation, so dilute it a little. Introduce or increase curd/buttermilk usage; this improves the lactobacillus flora in the gut and thus improves the digestive capacity. Reduce bread and biscuit (maida) consumption and increase whole grain/ gram in food.
