Before marriage I was a happy go lucky girl and since my mother and grandmother were there never learnt cooking . They used to finish their cooking by 7 a.m. My elder sister was also there so I did not take interest in learning cooking . My grandmother was expert in cooking and used to make yummy dishes and of our choice. My second brother used to like sevai very much so my grandmother used to make every sunday that too in th esevai nazhi. She used to say life time is there to learn cooking so she never used to trouble me . I also used to like to enjoy life. That time I did not know that I will be married to a family where all including men will be expert in cooking. Their family was a big family and when I got married my mother in law, brother in law and two nephews of my husband used to stay with us. Evenings before I came from office my nephews and brother in law used to finish the cooking. I used to feel bad but what to do in one way I was happy that they are helping me. I learnt cooking from my husband only. I knew little of cooking but not all varieties.
Later we shifted to a different place and I could cook better. New after retirement I have learnt varietyof dishes and cook yummy dishes and feel happy when my husband appreciates. I learnt to make mysorepak also and taught my friend and my lady boss how to make it . Now I usually make 7 cups because I feel it is easy to make.

My first experience in making coffee

    Dear friends

When u read this I know u allwill laugh. You all know that we South Indians make filter coffee.

First time when I prepared dikaction( I do not know how to spell it) I thought u have to put for each person 3 spoons of coffee powder in the filter. My cousins were coming home they were four of them. So I put 12 spoons of coffee powder in the filter and put water at the top. I was staying with my brother and sis in law. I could have asked my sis in law how to prepare it but my ego did not allow me to ask her. After sometime the filter could not hold more water so all the water came out.

Actually in my young days I was not so fond of cooking. So I did not bother to learn. Sometimes I used to see the recipie book and make something. Once I tried to make Groundnut halva. I should have tried with few groundnuts but I took more amount of groundnuts. I had to grind the groundnuts. That time my elder sis in law was pregnant. She could not stand the smell of groundnuts and she started vomitting. I had to leave the groundnut halwa in half way only.

So, cooking was not your cup of tea, and making coffee also was not your cup of tea? : )

Dream of many a woman to come home to dinner already prepared... but that also comes with misgivings.....

Nice gentle recall. Felt good to read.

I had a friend saroja, by name, one year senior. She was a brilliant girl, never gave the 1st rank to anyone. She got University gold medal in B.Sc. maths.Parents arranged for girl seeing. She had never entered the kitchen. The boy's relatives came. The girls' father asked Saroja to bring water in a small pot( sombu) with a tumbler. The girl obliged. She poured water in the tumbler to give to the mother of the boy. There was a shower and the pattu saree was fully drenched.Saroja was blinking.Instead of a tumbler she has brought the perforated top portion of a coffee filter. She never knew that coffee fliter had a perforated top.
Every one laughed. The lady said,God forbid, you didn't bring hot coffee .In village everybody began to make fun of the the most intelligent girl and her ignorance.
Somehow she could not get a good alliance. She remained single. After finishing M. Phil. In Maths she was a lecturer ,got quick promotions and retired as Principal of a famous Women's College,
She lives in an old age home Chennai.Even today all her qualifications, proficiency and status are all forgotten and she is referred to as 'coffee filter saroja by old and young in their family and she has a hearty laugh.

Nice one Mami... All the comments are so too good:clap2:

In my case my MIL does not know much cooking. So I am the klitchen queen and everyday is a challenge ( which i enjoy) to cook something new and please them all.

Somehow I love cooking and serving. I love my dishes and dont know about others. For a family of 3-4 members I can proudly say that even I prepare aviayl in a 3 liter cooker much to the likes of all. :clapclap:

Then during childhood I once poured hot oil in a glass bottle (after making pappad) just wanted to clean the place quickly and I was wonderstruck how the bottom portion fell down immediately. The bottle broke very neatly and had lost its bottom portion. Thus I learned an important physics lession.
Other than this most of the time I cook listening to mom's instruction from std 7th onwards which have made me a good cook now.

I have a cousin who married his classmate and both of them are from one of the leading Engineering colleges in Chennai. They married at a very young age given the fact that they were classmates and for a girl it was pretty obvious to get married at 23 or 24.

After the marriage (which was disliked by boys family given the fact he is too young to manage responsibilities) the couple began to live like college students and they both just wake up half an hour prior to office timings. They rush through the morning chores pick their lunch boxes, leave all clothes here and there and leave after bidding a good bye. The MIL now complains earlier she had to do everything for her son now for her dil too.
