    New Year Resolution

Last day of the week, last day of the month and last day of the year 2018. Such coincident comes not so frequently. I do not know when it happened in the past and when it will happen in future but it is certain that like all previous years 2017 will also go.

New year resolutions are made every year and are broken too. I am thinking of making a resolution that will be not only difficult but impossible to break.

Before I talk about my new year resolution, it will,be interesting to know about my previous years' resolution and what happened to them. Truth is, I came to know about new year somewhat late. So there was no question of making any new year resolution. In the village, we were told that new year starts from Chaitra. Latter on we were told that it starts from January. Some said it starts from Dipawali. By the time I reached school in the town, it became clear that it starts from January for sure. The calendar hanging on the wall at home had both dates as per English calendar and Tithi as per Hindu Vikram Sanvat calendar. It was a perfect meeting ground for East and West. All office work in English and all Puja and rituals as per Hindu calendar.

    History of my resolutions :

    1. Whichever may be the calendar, there is a tradition of making resolutions was revealed to me when I started talking in languages other than my dialect which were Hindi and English. The resolution fever caught up only when the exams were knocking at the door. 'From tomorrow will get up at four in the morning' . Alarm was set but nothing changed, either I did not hear the alarm or simply got up and tumbled back on the bed. It was then decided to do as much rote learning during the the day into late in the night but then again eyes would be heavy before long and would go to sleep assuring myself that rest will be covered by waking up early in the morning. In short neither the resolution nor I became part of each other.
    2. After education, got into job and started earning my own. Now was the time to indulge in. During college days, one Sardar friend introduced me to the taste of cigarette. He never did it himself ( Sikhs are not supposed to smoke) but he said he liked the aroma of it. He would bring only one cigarette at a time. Those were the days of tight pockets so it never became a compulsive habit. But now that I had a job and money too and on top of it there was this feeling that smoking is manly and adds to stature and position, it became a regular companion. Starting with cheap brands like Char Minar and Panama graduated to Wills Filter King and imported brands. Some well wishers tried to warn and some resolutions were also made every year but resolutions and vows are meant to be broken only. Then there was serious set back and Doctor said stop smoking or else the light of life will die. Under life threatening situations, only option was quitting smoking. What hundreds of warnings and resolutions could not do, was done by one pain in the chest. Some habits do not go by making resolutions.
    3. There is a long list of broken resolutions. Will speak truth only, will not give bribes, will not get angry and so on. But most of them could not be maintained and the onus always fell on others. Speaking truth does not help, bribing is way of life, things do not get done by being calm all the time. If there were hundred needs for making resolutions there were thousands reasons for breaking them.

Now I think this year I must make a some great resolution and live with it for rest of my life. Took advice from friends. On some introspection found that I am already helping the needy to the best of my resources, trying to keep fit by morning walk, yoga and excercises, take medicines on time Etc Etc. There are some habits like love for tasty food and drinks, love and liking for all, helping people in need, not hurting others, no harsh words, living in harmony and so on. It is neither possible nor desirable to quit them now. Some of these must go with me particularly when there is no permission to take possessions like house, car, money.

After long and thoughtful deliberations within, I have decided to resolve as follows:
"I resolve that I will remain evergreen and immortal"

Howsoever hard I may try, I will not be in a position to break this resolution.
Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.

I too have a huge lists of new year resolution everyyear. I follow it ritually for a week or so and then break it unknowingly , followed by my lazy genes giving excuses all in my favor for breaking my resolutions. but this time I've decided to continue till the end of this year. Yoga and workout added in my already listed new year resolutions must to do list , no FB for a month is added recently, it's too hard to stay away as I'm an avid FB user but started writing diary instead...Not bad, felt like back to 90s...
Hope u stay evergreen and immortal, happy new year to u too :)

:hello:Wonderful read. some passages are axiomatic for others too.
    2. I have been consistent in the philosophy throughout the year that I would not break resolutions of mine and others made on the eve of the New Year Day or on the day itself. I am cocksure that I will not break my resolution bcaz I resolved to have none at the beginning of the Year every year and hence I have nothing to regret at the year end.
    Regards.
    Happy New Year.
God Help & Bless Us All.

I start my new year by having various resolutions in mind as if I am newly starting everything from the scratch.
The first day would be so different, that I would try my level best to pave route towards whatever the "resolutions" I have made.
Even, the first page of my diary would be filled with dramatic resolutions only.

But as I pass each day, the life would be no different from the previous year. It is just a new year as per the calendar, and that's it.
We are the same old people, our spouse, our kids, our family, our job, our car, our home, our neighbor, our attitude and everything about us remain the same.
Making resolutions may look dreamy, but in reality achieving them can be difficult.

So, this year my biggest resolution is not make any resolutions. But to work wherever I need to work in my life.

I have certain priorities, such as making a saving, making an investment, completing the construction of a house - which is only partially built.
Spend time with family, and more importantly cherish those times
    Reconnecting with family and friends

These are broad priorities, and they may take another 5-6 years too. But I can always start from now. I can always progress, and track my achievements.

These changes needn't to happen on a new year. But any day, any time... And more importantly, I am gonna take life as it comes

:hello:To remain evergreen & immortal could remain only as a wish but that is one of the ways that we can demonstrate our large hearted ness and or generosity.
    2. Writing diary instead Browsing FB SEEMINGLY good but eventually simply both activities eat away precious time instead of remaining or keeping one productive.
    3. These are only my views and I don’t like you to take it to heart but follow what your heart dictates.
    Regards.
Wish you & all your family members A VERY HAPPY BALANCE NEW YEAR.

    Dear Thyagranjan,
Reminds me of a Hindi Movie, was it Aradhana? where Ashok Kumar tells two mantras for successful married life to Rajesh Khanna. he tells him to remember two things always. One, fulfill every promise you will make to your wife. Bewildered Rajesh Khanna asks and the second?. Ashok tells him not to make any promise.

My resolution every year is to become a better version of myself. Through my adult eyes, I have realized that owing to the gravity of situations, it is possible for our brain to go into daydreaming mode and push the resolutions deep into unconscious mind. I have only realized after hard learnt lessons that it is imperative to offload the resolutions to external world either it be dashboard, blackboard or persist then as binary 1s and 0s on the computer chip. This shall allow our brain to go into executive mode and take stock of the situation in a more holistic view and keep pushing towards our goals in the top gear.

Overall, I feel that small micro wins achieved over a period of time can provide staggering results and jotting them down somewhere is only the first step towards that fruitful journey.

Interesting. Self improvement is one of the key stone in life. it is the most difficult part. for doing this one has to know what needs improvement. most of the time we feel we are okay and 0nly others need to change.
