'People are so addicted to television these days' went the complaint a few decades ago. 'People barely talk to you when you visit. You start wondering why you even bothered.'

There were still some who loved and craved human company. They'd do anything to have people around. Such people were 'needy' (what an awful way of describing a person!)

Today the scene is different but only slightly so. 'Everybody is constantly on social media. If this is not addiction, what is? No one has the time to talk to a person across the table but is in constant touch with others all over the world. ' Have you noticed, people are not even watching much television these days' complains someone who can spend hours on the telephone making small talk with friends and relatives. What is the difference? One uses the mouth, others their fingers.

Try spending time with some people. All one does is get snapped at, endless complaints, arguments all of which culminate in a headache. Safer then to escape into the virtual world where one can choose one's friends, discuss stuff with people who don't growl back and ignore the trolls. At least one has one's peace of mind. There is time and space enough to prevent oneself from putting one's foot in one's mouth.

Come to think of it, there is very little difference between social life in the 'real' world and the virtual, except for the distance. Good, bad and indifferent exist everywhere. Mainly human beings are the same in either 'world'. If anything, we see the real faces in the virtual world - the real faces of the charmers in the real world.

I feel the virtual world is dirtier than the real world. People pass lewd comments so easily in social networking sites which they wouldn't dare to do in person.

The age old advice that I have heard is to befriend some neighbors because they will be the first people to help us in case of emergencies or urgent requirements. No relative/friend elsewhere can come at that time. With everything comes the good and bad.So keeping communication in moderation everywhere should save us from headache of dealing with different kinds of people.

    My dear satchi
    A crisp thought provoking post!
Decades back, when we were children, the old and young would gather in the open space in front of the house and have a great time. There would be unbelievable bonhomie. There was no TV, no phone and we all depended on each other for our fun and rolicking time. Then the phone came and it was a luxury. Then the TV came and even the mundane programmes as that for the farmers, drew us like a magnet. As the TV programmes increased more and more, we started communicating less and less with each other. Then came the bane of cell phones and today people talk more with unknown and unseen faces across the globe than with local kith and kin. Everyone's cell phone is on perpetually.

Does that mean we get less space in expressing our self in front of the real world persons as we can do in virtual world?

    Dear Satchi,

Now now! How can you have the word "Illusions" in your title and I not show up? Of course, everything is illusions! Ask the master

Both you and I know very well that it is possible to meet the right people both in real and virtual world. Personally, I am still old school - I like people with all their quirks, good and bad, books with their faded covers/pages, plants with stems and leaves and flowers, even weeds, sky with the stars, the sun and the moon. How else do we experiencing all the five senses tell me? With all this around us, we still live in our heads so much and as much as I love online interactions, I need to feel the earth under my feet to appreciate everything the virtual world also has to offer now! Just that filtering has to happen at a rapid pace.

This past week end was spent listening to talks on the same subject and now you! Time for me to head out to the ral world with the first working day of the New Year! Catch you soon/later?

    @satchitananda

Satchi, your observation is perfect! Today with technological advancement, we are getting more and more isolated from the real world people, places and interactions. Virtual world suits us as we don't even have to make efforts to get off our couches, bathe or dress! We can hide our true selves and project a likable persona to the world, we can say what we like hiding behind a pseudo-persona! Isn't this freedom? In the real world disagreements develop into fights , while the n the virtual world, people say any crap they like, troll and then block the opposite person!

Unfair and unaccounted freedom seems to embolden our alter egos!

    Dear CS,

"Kitna badal gaya insaan"! Ever so true. Yes, earlier we had many people around us. If one person got difficult, there were still others and often everyone worked together to put the errant one in place.

Today with smaller families and fewer really close friends, one has to get on with the people around or be isolated. Trying to get along with inimical individuals around us could be quite an arduous job leading to spikes in BP. At such times, it is a tremendous relief to have books or the virtual world to turn to.

Unfortunately, everyone seems to be intent on having the last word in arguments/discussions these days. Voices get raised, discussions blow up into hot arguments. If this online, one can shut off the person or block them. What can one do with persons around one?

Monika, I feel in the real world, one often has to just shut up to maintain the peace. It is harder when the persons involved are near and dear ones. In the virtual world, one can do that all the more easily.

Also, that same freedom in the virtual world allows us to see the real faces of people who might appear to be very friendly/decent persons in real life.

Happy New Year and wishing you loads of happy interactions, both virtual and real with human beings as well as with Nature. :)
