I just love those statutory announcements before movies. “KICK THE BUTT. SMOKING CAN CAUSE CANCER. NONE OF THE ACTORS IN THE MOVIE SUPPORT SMOKING” Before you bat your eyelid it is followed by a scene in which someone stylishly lights up a fag.

I just don’t understand why such announcements are limited to smoking and drinking. In fact we need such cautionary notes in every field because whatever we do we run the risk of serious injury or death.

The recent Gorakhpur hospital incident in which nearly 70 kiids got killed due to lack of Oxygen supply showed how risky it is to enter hospital. So I suggest that every hospital should have a large signboard at its entrance: “COMING HERE FOR TREATMENT COULD BE INJURIOUS TO HEALTH” or even more poetically with a touch of Dante’s Inferno :”ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE”.(My friends who are doctors or married to doctors, my apologies. There’s nothing personal here).

Why, only hospitals? Even walking or driving on the road could be injurious or fatal. I don’t men just being run over by some drunk or sober speed maniac. They are of course an admirable lot. They often achieve what we consider as impossible. Just imagine getting the car on a footpath so high that even pedestrians have trouble climbing on it. (In my area the footpaths are so high that if you climb ten times on them every day, even if you looked like a sumo wrestler you would acquire a lean and men look within a month. They pose a serious threat to weight loss clinics and gyms.).That is real achievement!

But there are other threats than gjuys who just press the accelerator and forget about it and for whom brake is spelt as BREAK that is with reference to the bones of those who come under their vehicles. Imagine you are walking or driving on the road that suddenly caves in and the entire area looks like moon with the sudden emergence of a crator from which you are screaming your head off for help. This has happened in Chennai when lunar landscapes emerged in many areas with even buses getting trpped in craters. So it is only fair that all rods have the sign:” WALKING OR DRIVING ON ROADS COULD BE INJURIOUS TO HEALTH OR EVEN LIFE THRETENNG” Same with bridges even if they re not over troubled waters. See the way the bridge collapsed in Bihar recently and an entire family was swept away by flood waters. Wht do they build roads and bridges with nowadays? Shifting sand?

Why only roads? Even flying could be injurious to health. In fact taking a flight poses multiple hazards. It is not just your olane could crash. The airline food could be injurious to your health too.. You could end up rushing to the loo where you could find a whole lot of guys groaning and pressing their stomachs standing in a queue. Worse there could be terrorist in board with a view to hijack or even worse an honourable member of Indin parliament. So all planes must have it painted on them in blood red letters: “TAKING THIS FLIGHT COULD BE INJURIOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.THE AIRLINE MANAGEMENT DOES NOT SUPPORT FLYING.” Ditto for trains too.

If you think avoiding all that and staying within the four wlls of your home is safe think again. And think BUILDING COLLAPSE. Going by the quality of construction nowadays your roof could come tumbling on you. Or at times the wiring is so godawful that you could be caught napping when a nce warm feeling embraces you and turns red hot and you discover that you are bng in the middle of a fire caused by short circuit.

So how about a statutory warning:” LIVING IN HOUSES AND APARTMENTS COULD BE LIFE THREATENING”?

OP, After reading your snippet i remembered this one which said "Not every person can get a head replacement like lord ganesha. So wear helmet while driving two wheeler."

The same thought comes to my mind always. Which place we think is safe where we will not have any threats?

    Dear Balajee,
Then life itself and living itself is dangerous!!!!
May that is the reason philosophers preach for no birth again! Ways and methods they suggest, very difficult to follow by common man. Other wise " Punarapi jananam Punarapi maranam...." said by Shankaracharya. Let us try to follow what he preached.

    Dear Balaji,
Who bothers of these statutory warnings?

As laws are made to be broken, people think these warnings also are to be ignored.

absolutely on the dot. the whole world including oceans and seas rivers and the air we breath all polluted and dangerous to many species including human beings. providing statutory or otherwise warnings are ignored. it could be futile yet Governments carry on with statutory warnings. the undercurrent of your write up is serious yet you have put it humorously. I would consider even wedlock too injurious to health and therefore statutory warning in prominent places across the globe would help reduce many things including population.
    Regards.

    @Balajee
Tell me about it Balajee. I too have wondered why just the warning before the movie when the whole movie actually glorifies drinking and smoking. Hypocrisy I would say.

Coming to statutory warnings I would strongly recommend, at least in Amreeka, that watching evening news is injurious to health.
No because of the news content; that is a separate article in itself. If one sat down to catch the news from 6:30 - 7:00 pm there are countless ads on medicines. Medicines ranging from heart attack, to diabetes, to hair loss, to every ailment that every pore and cell of your body could be afflicted with, and all the ads ending with "...may even cause death!"
Not only do they make the poor viewer wonder if he/she has that disease but even the remedy does not guarantee long life.

Hmm life is not boring at all!
