As per an international study american parents spend around $371 (around Rs.24,000) on toys per child annually. And the child is supposed to have on avg 71 toys at any point of time. How do you think the scenario would be in India.

A quick survey of my friends revealed that our kids are not so badly off either. They have around 25-30 toys at any given point of time. What is your experience? How much do you think an Indian parent on an average would be spending on toys?

With GST tax on toys is expected to increase steeply especially the board games variety. Do you think parents will pull their purse strings tight post GST implementation? Or do you think nothing would deter a parent in getting the toy their child needs (neither access nor cost:))

Speaking purely from my own life and my personal experience from the circle of people I know, in what maybe called an upper middle class parents mindset.. definitely more than rs.25000 is spent on toys per year.

There is one room for these tiny guys filled with all their Furniture's and their toys (useless stuff included). From fisher price's baby stuff to duplo, barbie, hot wheels, baby cars, Lego, marvels, nerf guns, transformers, board games, balls, cars, guns, doll houses, kitchen sets, garage sets, tool sets, sports equipments, wave boards, skating boards, roller skates, cycles, bikes, n it goes on, I haven't even covered half.. And as they get older, the stuff gets more expensive too like more professional sports equipments, phones, gadgets, gaming consoles, etc.

Off topic, Branded clothes, shoes, accessories is another topic altogether. Along with School fees that goes into a few lakhs and Senior kids that goes for more trainings only adds on.

On topic, many have the mentality to spend for the kids, sometimes even blindly, so not sure if the gst will be able to change that.
I sometimes feel we end up spending more on them than us. :shakehead:

But like every other thing in life, this also has parents that are completely opposite. That's how life gets balanced.

That is quite some amount Ashneys. Yep I have noticed their cupboards are filled with toys. In fact parents frantically dispose old toys to make way for new ones somewhere prior to their child's birthday. This happens at our home too. We try to give away the old functional toys to our maids. But many a times I end up feeling that they might not use it as it is not appropriate for them. One could give it to an NGO but i feel rather bad if I do not have a good number of toys available to use that option. Wish there was some way I could magically make it be known that I have toys in good condition, anyone interested please come and take it. Have you ever felt this way?

I feel the middle class might feel the GST pinch. I mean board games fall under the 28 percent slab. Think the shared economy is going to make its entry in India

I would say $50 per month on an average, it went higher when he started to play video games. Often, we exchanged with other kids or gave it away for free in our friends circle.

I know of families who spends way more. In our case, The good news is, he never breaks his things. So we don't feel bad about getting him branded stuff as we know it will last for years. Plus we are into marvels, transformers and more like this, so it acts as our collectibles as well.

But the bad news is, his room fills out and drives us nuts. Especially the stuff that he gets as gifts with a million pieces or some random impulse purchases.

We pick any NGOs / orphanages close by or through someone's reference and Periodically, we keep disposing his toys, stationeries, clothes and anything he may not use anymore or grown out of. We add our stuff in it too. And our maids does get the first picks, but only whatever applies to them.

And we include our kid through out this process. He then started to understand that it's a good thing to do and helps out willingly. And recently, we gave him a box and asked him to put the stuff he doesn't want any more to give to other children on his own.

There is really no quantity when it comes to giving, you can keep adding on for some months or more and accumulate it all together and give. It really feels good when we do that.
