There is a stand-up comedy by Russell Peters on names and it's hilarious pronunciations.

What is exactly wrong with Poornima? Cant figure it out

DH and I have been thinking of the name Inba for our child. It is a gender neutral nice tamil name. But does it have any other meaning? :fearful:

We are trying to pick name for our baby girl due in a month. While we like some names, wondering if we should also avoid names of famous people. Like Shreya/Shruthi/Nithya. There are actresses or singers with these names and I am not sure if those will always trigger associations and kids might not enjoy it. What are your thoughts?

That's only a problem if you are white. They can hardly accuse a dark-skinned fellow of Nazism. But yes, if they just come across the name and not the person, it might create problems.

Well, the names "Abhishek" and "Shweta" were completely unknown when Harivansh Rai Bachchan chose them for his grandchildren. Now, they are so common, nobody bats an eyelid.

Westerners have a habit of butchering Indian names. There's nothing to be done. That's why the Chinese adopt Western names when they live there and expect foreigners to reciprocate when they are in China. Indians living in China adopt a Chinese name. Very good strategy in my opinion. Be Indian with the Indians and Western with the Westerners.

Gayatri is one of my favorite names... my cousin got it so I can't name my own child that. There are cute nicknames like ga-ya, gayu.

Now, kousalya and Gowri, I would avoid.
