    Hi folks,

I am thinking of buying another gadget for the main purpose of cooking more rice. Currently have a small rice cooker, but would like to have a larger one for occasions. Debating if i should go with instant pot or a larger rice cooker..

    A couple of questions,
Does the IP cook rice as well a regular electric rice cooker?

Do you have the 5 or the 6 quart? How much rice have you cooked in either model.

Does the IP make the counter messy while cooking rice ( my rice cooker invariably does)

    Thank you!

The iPot does not make a mess with anything I have cooked. It is fairly well sealed, so there is no condensation. I have not used the iP for cooking rice. I use a separate rice cooker for that. However, based on my experience, I think it should work fine. I use the 6Qt one, but since I cook mostly for myself alone, I seldom do more than 2 cups of daal (dry) at a time.

I do it this way because the iP has a stainless steel vessel that allows you to sauteé onions, spices etc. in it before adding your lentils or whatever, making it all a one-pot affair. This allows me to get the rice going in one cooker and the daal in the iP simultaneously. They need to bring back those tiered, stackable vessels for the iP that are currently out of stock!

It does. But for the right texture that works for u, u can experiment a bit with the settings. For us the rice mode works just fine ..but there are others who tweak the manual settings and adjust the pressure release to make it perfect for them. In a rice cooker u pretty much have one setting ..this one is open to customization.
6 .QT i think I have cooked max 8 cups (raw) in one shot so far when we had guests.
Nope its clean. None of that frothy stuff oozing out of the lid

BTW OP, if it is that 'frothy stuff oozing out of the lid' that you are concerned about, briefly soaking and washing the rice well may help get rid of it by eliminting the starch on the surface, especially if you prefer white rice and starchy varieties. Basmati or brown rice work well, with no problems.

I do wash as well, almost always, unless I'm feeling very lazy. The washing helps to get the grains all fluffy and separate, which is how I like my pulao.

if it is only for "occasions" get a large one. If your cooked rice is at or below 80% capacity then it won't spill while cooking.
