    6) The delicious Chicken 65:

The famous chain of Buhari Hotels has been in Chennai since 1951. One of the favourite dishes of Chennai, the Chicken 65, is believed to be introduced at Bhuhari by its founder A.M. Buhari. Interestingly they also offered Chicken 78, Chicken 82 and Chicken 90. A.M. Buhari was also made the Sheriff of Madras in 1973-1974. Ever wondered that there could be such a history for that dish on your plate?

    7) The Big Banyan tree:

One of the oldest banyan trees in the world, around 450 years, is located inside the Adyar Theosophical Society. The area it occupied was around 40,000 square feet but after a cyclone hit in 1989, the main trunk was uprooted leaving only a part of it now. It boasts with the pride of being acquainted with great personalities such as Annie Besant and Maria Montessori who addressed a number of people under the tree. The Theosophical society is open between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It is one the calmest and serene places located in the middle of the city.

    8) The Madras Boat Club- one of the oldest in India:

The Madras Boat Club in Chennai is almost 140 years old. It was founded by a few Englishmen in the year 1867. It was first started in the backwaters of Ennore. In 1892, it was moved to the location on the banks of Adyar River. Now the club has acquired the latest boats and oars from USA and is well-equipped. So, what are you waiting for?

    9) Go bargaining on the cotton street:

The cotton street in the Pantheon road is a one stop destination if you want to explore cotton clothes with a combination of vibrant colours. The better you are at bargaining, the less you spend on this street. It is up from almost 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is definitely worth a walk through the street.

    10) Backwaters of Alamparai Fort:

A very lesser known place on the outskirts of Chennai is the Alamparai Fort. It is in an almost destroyed state now. The sandy beach and the scenic backwaters is a must-see attraction of this place. The scenic beauty of this place is also a favourite of some notable Tamil movie makers. You might also get to tramp some sea shells and a variety of crabs on the shore.

Valluvar Kottam was built in the year 1976 to honour the great classical Tamil poet and saint Tiruvalluvar who wrote the famous Thirukkural. Three thousand stone blocks were used to create this memorial. All the 133 chapters of his work Thirukkural have been inscribed in the front hall corridor.

A life-sized statue of the poet is mounted inside the monument which has been built in the shape of a temple chariot (39 meter high). The place also boasts of a huge auditorium which can accommodate around 4000 people and is believed to be the largest auditorium in Asia.

Chennai’s major landmark, Madras High Court is close to Marina Beach and St George Fort at the Parry's corner. It is highly acknowledged by tourists and locals alike as it was one amongst the three High Courts that were prevalent in pre-Independent times under Queen Victoria’s rule in the 19th century. Also, it is the second largest judicial complex in the world.

Established in the year 1862, it was created by merging the Supreme Court of Judicature at Madras and the Sudder Dewanny Adawlut. Designed in an Indo-Saracenic architectural style by ace architect, Henry Irwin, the building has beautiful domes and corridors that represent the ancient architecture really well. The ceilings and stained glass doors inside the court are a marvel in themselves, unlike any other courts in India.

An Ode to Chennai, the Soft and Spicy City:)

The long coastlines, the warm breezy beaches,

the countable number of tree-lined boulevards,

The congested maze of streets which like a Rubik’s cube

never fails to amaze the non-residents,

But is just another Sunday crossword

all solved for the auto-rickshaw driver!

The dusty roads teeming with traffic,

the floating population swarming to meet the everyday.

The ever popular shopping bazaars opening into the sidewalks

that double up as flea markets, make-shift asylums, free public loos…

The high rise shopping malls built with glocalisation at its core…

The visage of Chennai borrows the entire spectrum

Bright red, yellow, green and blue,

with shades of grey and ash liberally diffused!

    Temples, festivities. flowers, culture fests,

The erstwhile hub of the South Indian film industry,

The new hub of medical tourism and automobiles,

The city has always been alive in its own terms!

The metro which has expanded to accommodate the Temple town

    Another hub, this one, of silk textiles that is;

as well as opened its corridors to the IT, ITES…

Where kaapi and coffee both sell hot!

where the ethnicity of the populace thrives

    amidst the vibrant multiplicity,

and the past is in an eternal rendezvous with the present!!!

PS: PLEASE EXCUSE (AND CORRECT ME) IF MY WORD PORTRAIT OF CHENNAI IS NOT FACT WORTHY...

THE VIVEKANANDAR Illam is more than a century and half old. Also known as Ice House, and you are right if you guessed the reason for the name, Ice was stored initially here, hence the name ..later it was procured by the Ramakrishna Matt people and the first branch of the Matt was established here. Today if you want to know more about the great man. Vivekananda, one can visit this Museum & permanent exhibition on Swami Vivekananda and the cultural heritage of India

A day late..but happy chennai or happy madras it is more in the spirit that lives on, rather than the name 378yrs and still going strong.... i would just add these videos that speak more than what i can do.. celebrations goes on ...but what stands out for me is the vandaarai vazha vaikkum chennai...it lives upto the slogan..
i see the number of expat students studying here, the number of expats who live and enjoy living here.. btw did any of you see the video put up by US consulate thanking chennai..

    i loved everybit of it..

Street Food Journey | Madras Day Special | Madras Meter

nothing speaks more than this one...
Spirit Of Chennai | Humanity Universal | Chiyaan Vikram | C. Girinandh

Did you know some of the word play in the madras bashai.. like kd..it was known deliquents that became kd..interesting right..
dubakur which means liar comes from dubashes who could converse in two languages around the george town area and they helped the britishers..over a period of time, they learnt to use it to their own advantage..and thus dubakur.. and oc which means free comes from ON company expenses during East india company .

Madras is as history that is more than just idli vada sambhar, filter coffee or coovum..it is more than just an emotion...

And yes there is a silent war against garbage, environmental pollution.
