    Hello Ilites,

We have moved to Rockford Il (1.5hrs from Chicago) last year from India.
Our visa is still under extension process, hoping for a positive response....:worship2:

We have joined our elder son in a school with rating 4/10.Our area has only 2 schools with rating 10 and admission to these schools is through entrance (and the cut off mark is 98%):BangHead: which my son could not clear.

There are also schools with rating 6 but the rents in those areas is too expensive for our budget. My concern is does the rating really matter?
    If so in what way.

My hubby wants me to go back to India with the Kids which I don't want to do. As my DH has many health issues he can't manage here on his own neither I can do it there because I am very much emotional dependent on him.

And my problem is, I can neither train them at home with the Indian books as they don't listen to me rather better to say May be I am not capable to handle and plan properly....:disappointed:

But kids education is important to us.

    Please give some tips/suggestions.

Any one from Schaumburg, Bloomington ..can you please share how much does it cost for a 2BhK..

    Thanks In Advance...
    Regards..
    Jaya

For elementary school, rating doesn't matter much as you can coach them at home. But for middle school and high school,it matters. For me,i would pick up the 6 rating school despite the higher rent.

Welcome to the land of Common Core :)
First off, please do not attempt reconciling Indian textbooks to the schooling here. It will not work. The standard of English is way ahead. Math is taught differently although the standards are the same in both countries.

How old are the kids? Which grade do they go to? Ranking of schools definitely matters. In addition I would also assess responsiveness of teachers to kids, how active PTA is (its directly proportional to the school doing well), demographic composition of schools, the income levels of the demographics. All these factors play a vital role in how the school functions. Unlike India schools are not independent of the community in which they operate.
Which schools do your kids go to? I will try to get the info you need.

Elementary schools in Schaumburg (Fairview Elementary is ranked very high, although I am not a huge fan) are good. Lots of apartments are available. Rents average about 1200usd.

You need kids to go to good elementary schools so their fundamentals are strong. No amount of Kumon or home-coaching is a substitute for a good school. Kids neither have the energy nor time to do a school after attending elementary school for 7 hours. They have "earned" their right to play then.

I am also curious about the cutoff you mention for the highly ranked schools. What is your source of this info? Those are some of the excellent schools in the whole state. Most schools will administer tests like MAP. Try having your kids take these. Ask the school district what kind of test they administer and you can coach kids on the test. Good luck! Let me know if you need more information.

    Hi Butterflyice,

Thanks for the info.I din't now that we should check for so many things before taking admission to school.

My elder one is 6.8 yrs old, grade 1 and younger one is 3 who is eligible from this September.

The top rated school here takes students only after conducting an entrance test which is called the gifted program. 98% is the cutoff and if no student meets that percentile then they do not take any students that year it seems. The principal of the school told us about this.

This amount is too big to us.
Because the house we stay in is 770.

    Thanks for the info.
My English is not good...excuse me if I made any mistakes.

You need not check - that's what the ratings are for. I was explaining what went into making the number.

It might be difficult to get into the gifted program right after coming from another country. Have your kid take the exam every year, he is bound to improve with every passing year. Don't get disheartened.

    Your English is fine.
I guess you can find a one bed apt in that range if you look around. There are plenty of options in schaumburg. You can look up the various rental communities in rent.com, apartments.com etc. Call the rental property and ask them if they have specials. If they do, you might get a deal.
Mount prospect might have lower rentals too.
The thing is Rockford is not part of chicagoland - suburbs very close to chicago and having excellent train access to chicago. So you cannot really compare rents in Rockford to chicagoland suburbs. However I have to say that the gifted program at Rockford is top-notch. I was pretty impressed by what I saw and asked DH if he can commute :)
