How could you not know Bullseye? You don't need kids to love Toy Story. :hide:

Now that we have renewed interest in the thread, how about we bring back our 'theme of the month'. It will keep the puzzles focused and prevent the newbies from flailing around too much. :biggrin2:

    Some suggestions -
    Space
India (works very well considering the readership)
    European history
    World geography
    Hollywood

    Please chime in...

Dude, don't make me feel bad. I've never seen the movies. Never heard of Bullseye till today.
I just got "The Martian" on my kindle a few hours ago based on your recommendation on some thread here ....
On a different note, turns out that this Adam Weir chap is deathly afraid of flying, go figure ... as was Asimov, author of the Foundation series. Immanuel Kant was the first to dream that the fuzzy looking stars in the sky were entire galaxies, but I seem to remember reading that he never left Königsberg --- life is cruel / strange sometimes!

No Rihana, I managed to figure who it was... with the help of Google thatha. Now there are enough additional clues, and keywords, esp from Priya, JAG and soka and of course the original puzzle itself, so just bung them into Google thatha in different combos and it will spit out the answer for you. To solve the puzzles in this thread I definitely take Google Thatha's help.

Maybe the reason they dreamed such magnificent dreams was because all they could do was imagine. :) I'm surprised no one's tried to make the foundation series into movies. I just checked and discovered HBO has commissioned a TV series!! It's going to be the coolest thing since Game of Thrones.

When you're done reading The Martian, watch the movie. Matt Damon got Mark Watney just right. They Hollywood-ized the ending but overall pretty good movie. Not trying to stuff sci-fi into your reading list but right now I'm reading "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet". If you're a die-hard Browncoat like me, this book will be right up your alley. It's a breezy read; not heavy on the sci-fi.

Oh and watch Toy Story - 1, 2 and 3! Seriously!

@justanothergirl JAG, good one! The red carriage stumped me though. And to think I got my answer via a website meant for kids after @Priyasrini almost gave it away :)

    A Primer on Solving Puzzles

The puzzles on this thread don't follow a fixed pattern. They are loosely connected by the use of images. Due the lack of a reliable structure, it is difficult to provide a step by step process of arriving at an answer. What follows are examples that illustrate the thought process, or the mental gymnastics for working out a puzzle. I've picked four puzzles, two each to illustrate the two types under which most of our puzzles can be broadly categorized. Of course there are multiple ways to approach a puzzle and I'm only providing a few. Hope this helps you get started with your Google fu.

Disclaimer: These strategies work only if the puzzle-creator follows the unwritten rule of making puzzles for this thread. Here I am paraphrasing @sokanasanah --

"devise the puzzle so that even if you have never heard of the person, place, animal, mineral or thing or never seen an image remotely like it, you still have a good shot at solving it, working out from the clues. Familiarity with the subject at hand may be advantageous, but not mandatory."

    Primer contd - part 1

Type I: Picture with a textual clue

    Soka's Old Ironsides puzzle

    Approach 1 -

Clue #1: As square as his head was round,

    - Start by picking a few search terms from the clues.
    - Plug various permutations of "round+head+square" in Google.
    - "Round+head" --> The first result is about the Roundheads, a section in the British Parliament. If you read up on them you will find that one of their most well known leaders was Oliver Cromwell
    - Image search for Oliver Cromwell statues --> confirms the identity of the image
    - Look up Lord Oliver Cromwell on Wikipedia --> confirms all other clues

Clue #2: Beheaded, but - Of natural causes brought down --> Died of sickness and later his body was dug up, exhibited at Tyburn and beheaded
Clue #3: Nom de guerre -- > an assumed name or alias --> Oliver Cromwell was nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' --> search for 'Old Ironsides' -- > Results bring up a ship, the USS Constitution

    Approach 2 -

    - Start with the ship -->
    - Look for searchable clues in the image --> Looks like a frigate with US flag, Independence or close to independence era, so approximately late 1700s or early 1800s -->
    - image search for "important US ships + frigates + 1700s --> Too many results
    - Search for "US ships +frigates + nicknames" --> Top four results include "Old Ironsides"
    - Search for 'old ironsides + Lord' -> Oliver Cromwell

Here's @Sokanasanah's explanation of the clues
