    Hi all,
My daughter is 5yr old. She's in ukg now. Basically she's a very intelligent girl. Speaks excellent English. Does every work at home. Listens to whatever I tell her. But her problem is only studies. She's learning alphabets since 2years and she still couldn't identify what is what. She writes a-z well but she can't identify if I ask separately. I tell her this is P and after a min if I show her p and ask what it is, she couldn't identify. I have also observed some carelessness while studying with me. I am very much worried about her. I am not comparing her with others but worried about her foundation. Even her tuition teacher is saying it is becoming difficult. Please help.

    that is sweet @oyeterzz.

this is something that worries me and i believe it to be a red flag...don't press the panic button yet, but how about getting her evaluated for cognitive skills and comprehensive skills too. ld is a very wide spectrum, and i do not want to push your dd into the box with my observations..

she is able to reproduce the alphabets because of rote learning..or frequent writing of the same over a period of two years..she is not able to recognize the pattern..

love it is not carelessness..do not use such strong words for a 5 year old..sometimes there is a cry for help that we parents do not realise. the tantrums, the stubbornness, the anger could be a call for attention.. she could be taking her cues from your worries..so relax and take it easy. allow her to play around with the words..make learning alphabets a game. how about using some games..like jumpstart alphabets learning, leap frog series of learning alphabets..
you did not say anything about numbers..is she fine with numbers..

i used to make chappatis in the form of letters to teach my son. yes he had ld. and i did not force him to write. i recognised the symptoms when he was in playschool. so i let him have another year to play and put him in kg only at 4+, and i do not regret the decision till date. he still has issues but we have come to the 12th. and we always painted huges alphabets in water colors.. one alphabet a week sometime...

just give her the space to adjust and understand. you need to be more understanding and patient..it will work wonders as you have caught it very young..you need to understand if it is the phonetic sound or the recognition of the alphabet that is difficult..and for this you need a evaluation to understand and help her better..

Thanks for your replies. She's good with the numbers. Writes from 1-100 although writes 5 and 6 in reverse sometimes. I bought her flash cards and also show her many videos of alphabets. But she loses interest soon. Past few months I've been busy with my pregnancy and now with my 2nd kid. All blame goes to me.

@oysterzzz do not be too harsh on yourself. you cannot help your kiddo by going on a self guilt trip. right now it is time for being strong and thinking of what next. time is precious. early intervention if necessary would definitely help your child.
your daughter needs an evaluation. do not put it off because you are helping or working with her. maybe a little more guidance on how to do would definitely help both of you.

    @laks09 any pointers for op..

@oysterzzz - First of all, don't beat yourself up. We all do our best given our situations. We all want what's best for our children. Sometimes we need a little help and direction. She is just five, so don't push the panic button yet. This tuition teacher jumped out at me. Sweetheart, even if she is restless with you, she can get from you what she can't get from others. You are her first and best teacher. She is too little for a tuition teacher. I understand how hard it is with a baby but maybe someone can watch the baby for an hot while you just play with her, bond with her and she won't even realise you are teaching her. Teaching a five year old, shouldn't feel like teaching. Making letters out of sand, writing random letters with rice and making her guess, maybe even colour the rice with haldi and kumkum and make her guess the red letter and yellow letter. If she can't, give her the answer and let her repeat. You can keep playing this way until she gets it. Even kids who have issues will pick up things in time.

I have a few things to say. I think an eval will be a good thing since she seems to not get the letters out of order. How about the numbers? Colours? Shapes?

Does she know only one language? How many languages can she comprehend?
If you tell her, take this yellow book, go put it on daddy's desk in his study and bring me the red book from the desk - will she be able to follow through without help or repetition of instruction in a language she is comfortable in? How fluent is her English?
By careless, I hope you meant playful with mom. All kids are like that, they learn more from moms and are prone to behaviours that they reserve for moms. Is she having trouble paying attention to things at school or at other places. Is she engaged in school or distracted? Does she need constant one on one attention from the teacher?

How about things like dressing herself? Can she put on pants without losing balance
while on one leg? Can she button up shirts? Open jars and bottles? Grip the pen in the proper grip?

From what you have written, I think whatever it is, it's a minor issue that can be fixed with the right way of teaching her stuff. If you get her evaluated, the person doing the eval or someone he recommends will be able to guide you further.

Btw, is there any possibility that she knows the letters and is just so bored that she won't play along? Instead of letters, try sounds. She may identify the sound better.

If she seems typical in all other ways and this is her only set back, then just make t fun for her. Make it less rote, less boring. I also suggest letting her paint a letter a day and do all sorts of things around the letter. Like eat food that starts with the letter, do
wn activity that starts with the letter, make the letter the centre of your life for the next 4-5 days and then move onto the next letter. She'll probably get that sooner than the TV programs.

im sorry for the long post. Hope you find answers, @oysterzzz. Good luck to you!

@shanvy - thanks for the tag. I'm not sure how much I've helped :)

Thanks alot both for your replies. More about my daughter is she is perfect in every thing. 9/10 say that her English is excellent. Sometimes she even corrects me. Good at numbers, identifying colours, shapes etc. She remembers even the smallest incidents like when she was a kid. She also understands and speaks Hindi. From last 2days iam showing her alphabets videos and also teaching her using flash cards. Now she got grip on few letters. I also installed apps for playing with letters. Now she seem more interested. In the apps she's identifying all the letters correctly. I think all these days she was bored with the routine teaching. In school they are already teaching sight words, number names and many more. Their syllabus has number names till 100. I wonder if a ukg student can take that much.

@oysterzzz looks like you feel she is fine. and i am happy for you.
keep working on your dd..if it is the rote learning that has put her off writing, find ways to make her understand in a engaged way..

ukg number names upto 100 is news to me but looks like our system of education definitely screws up in a lot of ways

just a word from been through this phase... evaluation was just a check up like anything else. and learning disability does not mean they are not good in everything. sometimes these kids are highly intelligent and just lack in one thing..say writing numbers or just letters..

Oysterzzz - Glad she is doing good. My dd has number names, reading and sight words in ukg. Reading is common here too. Here we don't have number names but rather numbers 1-100 but a lot of emphasis on numbers. Oh and dd had to write sentences using cursive writing. It's a lot for kids these days. Any way of finding a different school where they don't have so much to do in ukg?

Actually the school which she used to go was very good. It was a Montessori. She learnt everything there and she used to enjoy a lot. Can't believe she learnt 1-100 in lkg itself. But present school is at parents house which is a different city. This school is very nnearby, that's the only reason I joined her here. Here also they have play time but they want all the kids to exceed in a very less time.
