You would probably love the climate and darkness also ;).

Yes, you get around 100 e/month per child and it is not income based. You get an additional 50 e/month per child if you are a single parent. Paid maternity leave (you get around 2/3 of your salary or ca 550 e/month if you have not had income) is around 10 months. You can stay at home til the baby is three years old but you do not get after 10 months paid (except Kela pays a small amount).

Now they are discussing a new model for the maternity/paternity leave called 6+6+6. In that model the mother would get 6 months, the parents could choose who keeps the next 6 months and the last 6 months period would be reserved for the father. But it is not yet been going through legislation.

Just to mention: fresh air for babies is also practiced here in USA. My mom used to put me all bundled up in the carriage and under a tree, guarded by the family collie. She did not put me out in winter though...only the other three seasons. I think this practice gave me a life long need for fresh air. A friend from high school used to take his baby out with him in winter when he cut firewood with a chainsaw. Bundled up like crazy and propped against a tree so she could watch him Needless to say the first toy she requested was a chainsaw.

@armummy, I believe Germany and Austria also have pretty generous maternity and allowances for the child. Their education system is also quite balanced. Did you know swimming is compulsory for every child in school in Germany? And education from kindergarten all the way to Phd is free in Austria. But then its really hard to immigrate into these countries :(

@tashidelek2002, I love how people in the US try to get lost into nature given the levels of urbanisation. Question for you: Can you please suggest books on the line of LIttle house on the prairie series? TIA.

Even ladies in Denmark have very generous maternity leaves. 1 year paid leave. Government also pays some fixed amount for each kid until they turn 16. The government encourages citizens to have more kids. Because of the fact that many couples prefer to remain withouts kids or single.

Actually most of the USA is not in urbanized areas and the recent migration to urbanized areas seems to have started to reverse. Myself, I am living in a small town but we have all sorts of wildlife even in the village itself.

Since the children's books that I read were printed by Guttenberg, I can't really give you any hints. I will though say that the books on Native American life are very interesting and many are for children. I had a couple from Rutgers that I remember liking particularly well.

@shanvy - I had to step in here to say this. It takes a special kind of parent to raise a special needs child. We are not born this way but we become like this. We can put anything and anyone aside and focus on this child. It takes a heart of gold and a level of selflessness to put this child's needs aside and tend to a sick MIL/FIL. I would never be able to do what you did. I have no clue how you are the way you are. I would never give up on the best place for my child and go back to tend to anybody. I am amazed at your ability to put other people ahead of your own child. I have so much to imbibe from you. Thanks for sharing your story. I can't think of being even 1% Shanvy but I can think of you when the going gets tough. You are our superhero. Tell your son that he is one lucky boy. He gets the worlds best mom who is also a role model. I hope the guy is planning big for Mother's Day! And hey, that friend who says she wants her mom to pass away without issues, I kind of get her. I've been telling both sets of parents to please stay healthy because neither of us have the mental toughness to cope with a parent illness right now. We are already stretched thin! We have been talking about this. No real resolution, only more stress. :(

    Hi,

I have been always wondering how a mil feels about their dils and happen to see ur post :)

I exactly ve the same situation but take the place of dil... no offense..

jus try to put yourself in a situation of ur dil or ur dd in ur dils situation...how do u think u will handle this???

i am exactly in same family.. my hubby has the duty of paying my sil's education loan... support financially for her mrg... take care of my in laws and all... while i got nothing to do to my parents or sis... neither do they expect.. if at all, i need something, first thing he says is let my sis get married...

Jus a question... as u dnt expect anything from ur dd, wat makes u expect the same from a son???? or does ur dd support ur son in anyway... i only see dd exploit parents...

well u said, that God will repay them back... jus think of wat u had done to get suffered???? was it the same repayment???
