World Book and Copyrights Day, that falls on the 23rd of April 2015 is an UNESCO initiative to promote the importance of books and reading for the development of societies. This annual event has authors, publishers and book distributors join hands to encourage reading.

There is lot of debate on making books free and available to all. Lets not get into that here. Or rather until that debate is settled, lets honour the effort that goes into bringing those books to us readers. The hours of research by the author, writing, editing- I mean you get the drift right.

Now just because something is available free to download on the internet need not necessarily mean that the book is "actually free". In our search for a book by our favourite Author, we may have unconsciuosly promoted piracy.

On this day, as a true Book Lover join me in taking a vow to abide by the CopyRights guidelines. It just takes a little effort. Download only from open access sites like project Gutenburg. Or buy a book. Too expensive? Join a library. Yes the Grishams and Sheldons will get richer, but lets do it for the librarians and small time book sellers who are beating the odds everyday. Indusladies honours the Copyrights of all published material, it's now our turn.

To show your support, pledge a book- physical book, of any language and genre, that you've bought or borrowed, click a picture of it and upload it here. Love a book.. flaunt it here.

    This book is my pledge.

@Priyasrini this i can join. i have kept most of the books that we own in storage. right now have books that are my son's 12th and reference books that are covering a whole lot of space. we have only kept a few that my little man wants to read no a regular basis. i know the pic that i share would make it look like what is this guy (all of 17) doing reading these books...but that is how he is. no fiction for him, unless it comes highly recommended by his sister.

we usualy rent the books these days or buy them as e-book, unless all of us like the book and would like to own a hard copy.

Oh the pleasure of reading, the smell of a new quality book, the feel of turning the pages, the pleasure of going back and reading the lines that made a impact..the bookmarks, the fun of discussing..oh nothing can beat it..

my dream vacation without going anywhere..a cup of coffee, a good book and some pleasant music..bliss..

Shanvy, its really amazing how much and what your son reads. I have lots of such books but haven't gotten around to reading them.

Priya, thanks for starting this wonderful thread. Its so easy to get the book we want of the net but its time we think of the hard work that goes behind writing and publishing each book and the people who are dependent on it for their day-to-day living.

    Here is my pledge.

Madhu that is so thoughtful of you to give your books away to schools. :clap
You have stayed true to the cause behind this UNESCO initiative and supported reading. Please don't buy a book to pledge, you can join a library, there must be one in your town. You can pledge a "burrowed" book too.

My covenant with the grim reaper please, don't enlist me before I tick the list! I know it will take 250 years so you better wait.

I see the Anais Nin discretely tucked under the Milligan. Clever girl! :rotfl

Here's one of my prized possessions,

    AK.jpg

Picked it up at an airport years ago. It's been lovingly read a couple of times.
