@AprilLisa nice choices. Haven't read Little Women and the Book Thief though. The Undomestic Goddess" was a nice book.

@Priyasrini I know only couple of characters you mentioned. Going to googlesmiley to find about the other wonderful women.

@Jingi92 I too like all the characters you mentioned. I have missed Shakespearean characters. Most of you know I like light read, so it won't be any surprise if I say Viola is my favorite.

@Indoc Miss Marple is a unique character indeed. It used to be so interesting how she pieces up bits and pieces of clues at the end.

@Shanvy and priya, you have piqued my curiosity about those characters.

I love Hermione Granger - bold, intelligent, quick witted, follows her heart, decisive, brilliant !

Of course, Jane Eyre, Jo March, Portia et al- who doesnt like the bolder victorian heroines!

I love our very own Shakuntala (before Kalidasa made her clingy), Damayanti, Ahalya, Kaikeyi, Shabari, Parvathi, Draupadi, Subhadra, Savitri, Sita (before Uttara kanda made her weepy) and many more from our history and literature (I dont use the word mythology when it applies to our history)

And what about Rani Laxmibai, Jijabai (Shivaji's mother), Samyukta ! You read so many brave stories about them!

I hated Bella Swan - clingy, whiny, indecisive, broody, depressing in the first 3 books of the twilight series!

I have heard of the Girl Series Malini but haven't read them. Will try one next.

Hrastro, all the characters you have mentioned are wonderful. I feel bad that those wonderful Indian women you mentioned didn't cross my mind when I was listing my favorites. Even when I was school, I liked reading the story of Shakuntala and Samyukta. Guess I was a romantic (in making) even then. Sabari and her berry fruits remind me of avvaiyar and sutta/sudatha pazham.

Hermione is all you said and what I like most about her is her integrity and standing up for what she believes.

Have you heard of this prolific author called M.C.Beaton? She has written such entertaining novels. I love her regency novels - there are several series to choose from with resourceful, quirky, very human female characters. Eg. Lady Fortesque from the Poor Relations series, the Tribble sisters from the School of Manners series, Miss Hannah Pimm from the Travelling Matchmaker series. The books themselves are predictable, the romance angle is laid upon quite thickly, the plots are rather cinematic. However the wit in the writing and the earthiness of the characters really make up for all the other flaws, IMO.

The equanimity, kindness and patience of Precious Ramotswe in the no1 ladies detective agency by Alexandar Mcall smith is to be envied.

Harriet Vane from Dorothy L Sayers's novels is really brilliant and avant-Garde

Dagny Taggart from Atlas Shrugged but enough has been said about this go-getter.

Caris from Ken Follet's World Without End shows sheer grit and strength of character in the face of all hardships she was put through. She was a trooper.

@guesshoo Thank you for recommending M.C. Beaton , I have downloaded a few. I have to add that her book covers are amazing, hope to equally enjoy her writing too.
