    Folks,
First of all, I admire the tenacity that some of you display here. I'm sure all of you have other more important things to do but you take the time to workout/eat right and keep staying fit. I wanted to start a thread to gather tips on how to keep the momentum going on our low points. Maybe we can all get a tip or two from each other.

On cold snow days, when you just don't want to get out or cant get out, what do you do?
I've been homebound for a few days. I could have gotten out today but I just didn't have it in me.

What do you do when you are hormonal and you know your period is on the way? The PMS is what makes me go crazy. I need a lot of self pep talk to get out the door. I keep telling myself that I can't do this today.

What do you do with sick kids? Home video or skip workout?
I just don't bother until the kids recover.

What do you do when you have stresses that you have no control over?
Stress is the biggest demotivator for me. I have to push myself on stress days. I get some extra motivation if I have made plans with my friend to workout together. I love talking to her and getting a workout in at the same time.

What about stress eating or eating stuff around the house when you have no energy to cook?
I'm having less of these days. I wake up early and finish my cooking for the day before my kids wake up. Hence, I don't have the "no food" excuse anymore. I do cook an additional subzi or some quinoa or something that I know no one else will eat but I need that for myself.

Mindless snacking, how do you control it? Especially when your kids are snacking and you go for the chips!
I just buy snacks that I know I will not get tempted to eat. I also buy mostly healthy snacks these days with the exception of some cookies here and there. There are things I can have at home and not eat and those are the things that I buy for the occasional guests or the kids. Any other way to help here?

How do you get your water in?
This is my biggest problem. I've now gone back to my old ways. I used to fill a big water bottle that I got for myself but now it's all out the door. How do you keep hydrated? Let me in on your secrets!

Hope you guys have lots more tips than the above. All motivation related queries are welcome too!

    Same feeling..
I always had problem with workout but i was good in maintaining diet once i set the goal.. But for past one month i have trouble in diet too.. i m having sugar cravings and whenever i go out i insist on having dinner or lunch outside. which resulted in drastic change in my weight. So literally 2 days back i thought i lack motivation and decided to do something..

First of all i found a photo of myself wen i was fit and set that as my mobile wallpaper .
Next got some motivational quotes from Google example
    Stop Wishing ; Start Doing
Be the best Version of You
Weight gain doesnt happen overnight ; Neither does weight loss
    One Pound at a time

I wrote these on papers n taped it on the wall..
    In the Kitchen
Dear Stomach you are bored not hungry So Shut Up

I saw in talk show, that One of the main reason we avoid/quit workout because we don t enjoy it. Planing to try Yoga , Zumba , and 7min workout gonna continue which i m comfortable n enjoy doing..

Happy to share my thoughts . Thanks for this thread @laks mam.. Hoping to get more tips..

LAks09 you really mean this, or is it for all of us. lows points are plenty for me. somedays the cramping is so bad that i want to say enough let me go and lie down. there are days i want to run away..literally!! i know you can identify with that feeling of mine.

these days with no maid, and the whole works plust handling dd, i have this feeling of wanting to let go. but then i remember, all my struggles to get this far and i don't want to go back to the place i was a few years back.

no pmsing. but menopause for quite a few years, there are days when i feel my hands and feet are burning, they are so sensitive, that i scratch to the point of having scratches drawng blood.i know my doctor says i am allergic, while i agreed to what she said, until i met somebody who said she faces the same..some have it so easy..hey discussing the boring thing here, just to say though different can understand. these days i try to eat and also give dd food that have less salt, more serotonin based to calm the feeling..maybe more iron rich food. and for me more flax seeds..

i still walk simple miles. since i workout at home it is easy. even with dd sick i do keep walking at least a simple 1/2 miles..i know it is difficult. but just look at it this way, i need to keep up the spirit, i need to show my kids, that a little sickness is not a excuse, we will overcome..(mine are growing faster and they take cues from me..)

Stress and i start drooping after being strong for long when the kids are not watching..ACtng tough all the time takes its toll., i just walk to some wonderful slokas, chants or some krithis that would pep my mood. or walk while i read a book.(now don't ask me how i do it..i do it..)
    .
sometimes. but thank god that i plan and keep fruits and healthier options around. perks of having kids who also want to lose or maintain weight.
mindless snacking happens very rarely after i consciously started keeping track of my food. moreover i store only homemade muffins, cereal bars..and i don't like sweet things a lot..i grab a cucumber, carrot or some dried cranberry, raisins or blueberry..but on days i attend a wedding or a function, everything goes for a toss..

Any other way to help here?
I keep most of hte snacks (say a few rusk packs, a few belvita -oats/bran cookies, and some mcvittes..well snacks well this is all that we have..and sometimes i pick the wonderful small size khakkras from a store.) but i keep tins for storing. most of these go into those.so a kind of semblance of control happens. don't keep every piece of snack in your perusal. keep them away if you need to store.

this is easy. early morning, i have a bottle gourds/radish/herbal kashayam..so a glass to two glasses of water goes in. i have water that has jeera, tulasi steeped on some days. i also get that mix of herbs used for water (what do you call that..red water) ingredients I do make a litre or two of it. and have it across the day.i keep small glasses/bottles at places where i usually relax in between. near the computer, dining table, bed, sofa..so i end up drinking. other days green teas, white teas, hibsicus teas anything to add that zing to the regular water..
i also like mint, lemon, ginger flavors in water. fruits i like peach flavor..
dress up your water to get it in.

need all the motivation..it is all about consistency and committment..and recently i drew some inspiration from this person..
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5FkshLcNLQ#t=164

Everyday i tell myself, you don't want to get back to that 2006 shape. i have a before and after picture of myself on my mobile to keep taunting me..
and yes i need to fit to reach my life goals and to inspire my kids that with a little committment and consistency and control lot of things fall into place. in short, my kids are a major motivating factors..

let us pep each other when the going gets slower or comes to a stand still...

    Hi Laks,

During periods I don't do workout. Every woman is different and so is everybody's view on this. Some like to workout like regular days, but I am not really in a position to do even my regular activities due to the pain and the depression.

Though I control bingeing when others are eating, it is during stress, PMS and the days when I have not preplanned my meals that I end up eating junk.

I think it happens with everyone. The important thing I guess is to be in control most of the days and allow just few days for those slip ups to happen which are anyway going to happen.

Being fat itself is a motivation for me , seeing the way your body changes month after month and the before / after pics .

But I want to understand how these slim ladies (@Kavitha , @Buds , @Sri) manage to eat healthy and workout ?

Cold weather in east coast , I don't even go out for grocery shopping , not much physical activity .

    • WhatsApp group of friends from different timezone . They react so much if we skip workout or eat some junk . Connected 24 * 7 , cannot escape from them. And little competitive in losing weight and exercise . We push each other and progress too . [It was me(intelligent mind) who created this group , but they dont even appreciate me and give any credit .].

@aruljothid - Thanks for the tips. The photo of what we were like before kids, before marriage and before any weight gain are all motivational.
That letter to the stomach was so funny!!!! I just broke out into a huge grin.... Lovely way to stop eating junk.

I really mean it, all of you are super stars...Yup, I know the achey feeling. I just realised my shoulder pain is seasonal. I've been taking pain meds again. I now know for sure it is related to the cold weather. Thank God, the ice is melting and I can run again in a couple of days!

I better keep telling myself that. There are so many things I love to do but the minute the ice is on the ground I want to hibernate!

I have to try the low salt and more flax seeds. Does chocolate have a calming effect ;)
That's what I crave for the most!!!

I seriously need to download the walking videos. Walking is such good cross training, something that i'm neglecting to do. See once we start running we think we are invincible. Walking is a must, I need to walk on rest days. Thanks for pointing it out!!!

I meant to ask you, can you share some shlokas etc? I'd love to add it to my playlist for home and listening to them while walking to leslie sounds great. Yes, shlokas always lift my mood, I'm glad you brought it up! Read? Audio book or real book? Real one, I'm not even trying but the tip is good. I can try audio books while walking!!!

Thanks for the smart snacking tips. I'm not much of a snacker but now I eat two snacks and it's a habit. I love my nuts et al but thanks for adding to my list.
I love the dabbas idea. I think i'll implement that asap, my DD needs some discipline in eating. She works out so much with her activities that she pigs out with whatever I have at home. I like the idea of keeping things out of sight!
Btw, im going to try the home made snacks some day! Not just yet but someday for sure!!!!

Shanvy - Share the kashayam recipe. Early in the AM, after the bath, the first thing I put in my mouth is "bru instant" and after that, no thirst! I maybe thirsty when I wake up because of the heating indoors but I won't take a sip of water before my coffee! I drink only two cups a day these days and I don't want to dilute it before or after!!!!! Im going to try your kahsayam and see if I can do coffee later.

Dressing H2O is a great idea! I need to do it. I sometimes hate the sight of water, especially in the cold when I need to drink cold filter water!
You mean "Chukku vellam podi" - the red powder! Don't have it here :( I shall try the
other infusions. Mint and lemon are favourites!

Inspiring kids and not going back to where I started is big motivation. I need to remember the back then! I should have kept a pair of jeans, I don't have any!!!

@thegirlygirl - Thanks for stepping in! I completely agree with eating in moderation all along so that a few days of giving in wont affect things. I generally don't have that much control! I do splurge every weekend as a result of which, if period days are weekdays I better watch what I put in my mouth. I can't imagine going an entire cycle without splurging, but that's a nice way to think of it. The entire cycle without splurging and a few days of some change. I shall try it!
I have to stay working on my period otherwise I do tend to go into a terribly depressed state which isn't good for either kids. The exercise is helping me stay sane. Only thing is motivation is low on those days and yup the aches and pains although not as bad as what you are describing can dampen the spirits. Hence my query. I guess if I work out everyday of the cycle and skip period days it should be ok. I don't. These days I workout only 3-4 times a week(maintenance mode you see).

Wow! You remember all that. Thanks!!! I love you too. You talk about me outside of IL? Should I start signing people up for personal pep talks? I'm honoured, thanks.

Oh yeah, I cook daily. Thanks for quoting my post. I cook and I'm still super excited to do stuff like hair and makeup etc. Shopping is my middle name too. Working out was super exiciting until the snow struck town. We are having a bad week, whom am I complaining to, you people have had a bad week all winter long! Anyway, sunday we are having our normal temps, hope to get some miles in!
And talking about socializing, tomorrow is a heavy day. Morning meeting with autism parents and evening with friends. I hope it doesn't snow and spoil all our fun :(

Btw, the no sugar thing, I totally forgot. I still don't take sugar in my coffee, it's over a year since I gave it up. I do eat sugary snacks though. I did give up all refined sugars a while ago but a snack here and there doesn't count(typing with haggen dass in the other hand).
Whatsapp group? Too good. I don't have any friends IRL other than the one friend I run with who is remotely interested in anything that I do with regard to fitness. I'm glad I found my one buddy, we have fun together.
Dietbet is a great url. I didn't know it existed. Thanks for sharing. I'm now not losing any as of now but I will want to lose the 3-4 lbs I gained over the last few months but mostly next month after my half that I'm running. I will definitely try that one!
I used to be a regular on myfitnesspal, not any more!!!!

Thanks ladies, keep the tips coming.

@Laks09 @rmpriya has a big group going for her some of them from il if i am not wrong. some of these people have hooked up together as a group on fb and whatsapp i suppose. and she always does this.pull up a few posts that were posted months or years before that even we would have forgotten. and i like that..

and don't bother, take that much needed rest if you need to..sometimes our body and mind are not in sync and that is when we don't feel like doing some of the things we were usually consistent. so ultimately it is listen to your body, for me.

and on the slokas, chants, give me a day will upload and share the link. most of it is on my drive as i have been sharing with few of my friends. and yeah i read ebooks and physical books while walking, i try to avoid but then i get into it after controlling for a few days..

and yes dark chocolate has a better calming effect. so does pomegranate and banana that my ds's doc advices to up these whenever i find him more restless instead of going the drug route along with exposing him sunlight and talking about happy moments. yes flax seeds nuts and most of foods with omega fatty acids help.

yes dressing up the water helps a lot..helps in reducing water retention when pmsing or also in people who have issues. even a dash of cinnamon/vanilla can up the flavor. i like mint, lemon, tulasi more than these. and chamomile/sage/thyme when i am feeling low..(this one has that bark that makes the water red, along with some cooling roots, i don't remember the name of the bark.i only remember it is common in some malayali households..)

    Will come back with more..
