    Hello friends,

I am a silent reader of this forum which has been a boon for everyone suffering due to various issues. Now I am in need of help from you people about information about good psychiatrist/psychologists in Chennai.

I have some marital issues. My husband is a flirt and **** addict, but loves me, takes good care of me and kid. I have some personal issues as well (I have some disorder due to my traumatic childhood) .

I want to consult a professional to treat these issues. Please suggest some good service minded professional.

I am have heard a lot about dr.Shalini psychiatrist who comes in Vijay tv, But I am not sure if she is good or a money minded person, coz she is most of the time in media. Please let me know if anyone had personal experience consulting her.

Please help me friends with your suggestions.

Did u mean a psychiatrist or psychologist ?

Psychiatrist : Someone who is a medical doctor specialised in mental health , diagnoses as well as cures mental health issues mostly through monitored medication and sometimes through counselling i.e talk therapy. Only a psychiatrist CAN write prescriptions for mental health issues and is usually associated with a hospital.

Psychologist : Someone who does counselling and can refer to a psychiatrist if s/he feels medical intervention may be needed. CANNOT and MUST NOT write prescriptions / get into medical diagnosis / order or interpret medical tests

Usual and best procedure is to first talk to a good counsellor, after 2-4 sessions s/he will be able to determine if medical intervention is needed (eg : anti depressants for depression) and may refer you to see a psychiatrist. Landing up at a psychiatrist's office directly may not be helpful as they may redirect you to see a counsellor first.

Psychologist : Vijay nagaswami or saras bhaskar. quite frankly neither are as great as they are made to be, but you can try them if you dont have any other referals. It is best to see a couple of counsellors to see who understands you best.

Psychiatrist : The absolute best is Dr Radha Shankar. She only gives medication if it is absolutely needed. She is associated with Fortis as well as Nova (both in adayar). Goodluck !

Thanks a lot @madras2018 for your valuable inputs. I will check for Dr.Radha Shankar. By the way, do you know how much they charge generally.. I have heard psychiatrists usually charge based on the time.
Also do you have any idea about dr.Shalini? She talks well on relationships.

    Thanks in advance!

Do you have a family doctor that you go to regularly? If yes, he/she would be the best person to lad you through your choices. Choosing the right psychiatrist is utmost important.

going to primary care doc is the first and best course of action in north america. not so in india. they are clueless themselves and will just throw a cpl of names of counsellors / psychiatrists at patient. such referals may also not necesserily be competant frankly.

I tried Susan George (i think i am right because i remember meeting a slightly older lady at her flat in foreshore estate ) and I wasn't too happy - did not find her approach very scientific, no notes taking etc. But the interesting thing is i went on a referal from a young single friend of mine (in her 20s) who had less serious issues in life and she was quite happy with susan. So varies person to person!

BTW, in the the link above in the very first photo, the lady on far right is Saras Bhaskar. I have also tried the lady, 2nd from right, she is arundhati swamy, she's nice but she is more of a child psychologist specialist.

I wld recommend saras bhaskar (what i liked abt her is that she is easy to talk to, is a modern thinking woman who has lived and worked abroad, so she can relate to problems of urban couples or those who have lived abroad.).

    GOodluck !

    @Akkarshana Sister,

:welcome to IL family, Will keep you in prayers and May Baba bless you with peace, harmony and happiness always.

My suggestion would be Dr.Jayanthini, She personally deals with every patient with ease, makes them feel as if we are talking with our own person.

Doesn't elaborate procedure and the diagnosis is quite simply done, More info - Dr.Jayanthini,Psychiatrist,Chennai

JMO as I had a good experience through her for my Elder Brother. Best Wishes..
