How many of you had given thought of what you would do for a living? Or did it just happen that you chose one and started to make a living? Are you passionate about what you do for a living or is it just a mundane chore.?

When school seniors graduate from college here, these questions have to be addressed by them. I am always surprised by the number of people who seem to know exactly what to do.

When I was growing up it used to be that most children would choose to be an Engineer or a Doctor.
Not being able to get into one of these positions would surely be a setback in making a living. So the pressure used to be on to get into these colleges. Children used to cram for weeks on end in preparation for an exam. Parents would also put undue pressure on the kids.

What you do for a living, should tap into your inner self and contribute to society also. But how many of us do not have the luxury of these kind of facilities whereby we are able to do what we truly desire.

Many get into a profession based on convenience or the pay scale is attractive or they were recommended thereby someone.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you someone who was very clear where you wanted to work , what type of work you wanted to do? And are doing it today or till you retired. Or did you come by chance into your profession? Do share here.

    Dear AC,

Nice thread. I have seen many people being forced to play a role to lead their life. For instance i would like to tell what happened to one of my relative. He was a normal student passing out with 65's - 70's.He had a desire to do some degree like BSc in Comp along with some comp related certification and get a job thro this. But his parents wanted him to do an Engg course, he tried a lot to explain his incapability to complete it, but they were strong in it since they had an opinion that a guy with such degrees cant survive, but forgot to think a poor engg student cannot also survive.Net result: He studied Engg, just studied, but still not able to find a job out of it due to his poor performance.

Like him there are 1000's and 1000's.A colleague of mine always used to complaint about her job.She was attracted by the pay and accepted the offer but still looking out for a big leap.

If a situation forces us to be someone or something, then atleast we can tolerate, but when we are forced by someone else it is really pathetic inspite of them being our well wishers.

If a person questions me "Who r u?" i would like to reply "Whom i want to be".

    Dear Cindhuja
I have come across situations like the one you mention.. pressure from parents to pursue a course of education.. I thought these days its getting lesser.. Till I met my dh's cousin she forced her son to get into medical school. Will not take no for an answer.
You did not mention if your career of choice today is your choice if you have one that is!

    dear chitra,
against all odds in my life though i knew official works my sudden disability brought about a drastic change in my lifestyle, i had to work against all odds to take care of my children.
today when i think of it, it has been something after my heart and the most highly competitive profession of singing with groups in public with an hearing impairment gave me a high no doubt every night after the show when i return home i realised how much i loved this profession, money wise also it was not adequate and people did not respect this profession and thought it is one of the most easiest even my children but then once you get into this, and one has to face a 50,000 minimum people from all walks of life. so you are not sure about their reaction and how they would appreciate a tomato can land up on you, this fear has always plagued me. by god's grace this never took place..

every month a set of 12 songs has to be ready from 4 to 5 different languages, telugu, tamil, hindi, kannada, and sometime malayalam, gujrathi and bengali, according to the season. so you can imagine how tough it is to get the words right, here i must mention my daughter priya played a very important role in writing down the words so it was easy to grasp only the tune and tone of the words. but once the programme is over and people come over to say are u gujrathi? i applaud the inner self vow, thanks to this knowledge to have earned this appreciation from them and when i say in the negative they do not believe...

each day a new crowd, a new atmosphere, a new marriage pandal, and to hit it off sometime ladies came near the stage to check my jewellary and saree whether it is silk now this is done mostly by the telugu crowd, my boss always used to tell me, hey sundari anda cream and maroon pattu podavaey please, so i used to tell him yen neengala vangitharel and he used to go on begging pl pl innaikki periya party and so on, so all my collection of saree business profits used to go for this get up for the stage.

i lived the life i enjoyed most and singing has been my madness from young and i got it and proved that i could excel against all odds, only sadness is my father and others never had a great opinion not that they made me an IAS officer only too ready to get me married without checking...anyway that is another story.

thank you for bringing out those memories, the high living expectations in this profession is something one has to go through to understand its reactions and when they do applaud and go mad and start dancing you feel the power of your voice, could shake not one or two but some 50,000 vow thought how usha uthup must be feeling and asha bhonsle must be feeling when they compare you to them mostly ahsa bhonsle, they used to say if we close our eyes we feel this is a record being played,
now that is a very high honour to me.

like in mahabharatha they say kunti was given the mantra to save the clan and they knew in advance that her life is going to be so, like wise maybe god knew my life and gave me the voice and other talents to tide through and its my athmasamarpanam to him daily for that....sunkan

    Hi AC,

I was never pressurized to take up a subject. It was my choice. Parents just backed me.
Then I got into a job which again was what I liked....though the pay packet was a little less initially.
Then after marriage, when I moved to Gulf, to Kuwait..the job in a school was not much of my choice, but it just happened...nevertheless enjoyed doing it....My dh too never forced me regarding this.
Now after some relocations, I have decided to take a break...a big one...with other priorities in mind. So, I am relaxed and enjoying it.
I just hope and pray that it continues to be always by choice and not out of some pressure....becos out of pressure, maybe we bring out the best...but it could be to stressful.

    bye

Hats off to you dear.. Just cannot imagine the diffficulties you would have faced the trials.. the tough times. You really are a source of inspiration.
I think the character of the person comes out in these kind of trials. And hence the situation.
I totally am in awe of your concluding lines.. The reason why God gave you the voice.. Beyond any doubt there is God.. But when we hear or read about his presence reinforces our faith and gets us ready to face yet another day.
In God alone I have seen the tender love of a mother and the harsh judgement of a just ruler.. for God does punish evil.
You should probably write a book or autobiography..
    Thank you for sharing here:)
