I have electric coil in my apartment and the non stick pans are getting burnt and difficult to clean. If I keep the electric coil to medium, dosa batter gets stuck to the pan and it is difficult to take it out. On the other hand, if I keep it on high the pan is getting burnt. Im looking to buy an electric griddle like Presto brand which is reasonably priced for $20 or so. If anyone has been using the same or any other brand of electric griddle, please give your feedback and if it is suitable for making dosa and roti. I want to know what to look for the maximum/minimum temperature settings.

    Hi abc00,

I'm using Presto electric griddle from last 2-3 years..It's really good for preparing dosas and omelets. At a time u can prepare 2 big dosas. Some times i used to grill veggies also. I never tried making rotis. I used to toast bread also.

I bought that griddle in Kohls for $9-$10.

    Hi Dynamic,

Thanks for the reply. As you said you are preparing dosas Im assuming that the temperature setting should be ok.

Have you tried a cast iron comal? Mexicans use these for making tortillas...I got mine at Aldi for less than $10 and Lodge also sells one. Heat is very even and doesn't get ruined.

Yes Tashi, I do have the Lodge cast iron pan. I guess I was so much used to gas stove in my previous house and now Im not able to adjust to electric coil cooking yet. Keeping the pan on medium heat is making the dosa batter stick to the pan. Thus Im looking for electric griddle ideas.

With electric it is slow to heat....gas is immediate but with electric you have to preheat the pan for a few minutes before you try to cook. Once it's hot, then it is slow to cool down so you have to adjust your thinking about timing on electric. Keep trying...you will get it.

    Hi,
I dont have electric coil in my house but do have glass stove top. I use de buyer mineral B pan which is like cast iron pan but thinner. I use the same pan for making for dosas and rotis. The trick is same as tashidelek said to preheat the pan for good minimum of 3 to 4 minutes on low heat( I use 4 out of 9 heat settings), make dosa as usual. The pan should not be too hot nor too cold. Test the pan with some water to make sure that the pan is medium hot.

I also have a presto griddle that I have been using since 1 yr and works great for me. I usually have this griddle and one pan on simultaneously to make 2 dosas on griddle and 1 on my gas range with the dosa pan. This way even with some guests its not too time consuming to make dosas. See below the pic.
