Somebody had posted big issues on untouchability....and i felt so bad for OP having to face it when I am quite a rebel on that and do not even believe in it. All i found myself to observer is not to go to puja room or temple and puja to someoby's home....i still have to force my self. My DH also believes in it. (Gasp...) but when PILs not around, i end up entering the puja room and doing things as DH does not end up payign attention...I have to follow strictly when PILs are here, she used to crib on not washign hair on first day and then on 4th day etc...eventually i fake it...and then even stopped doing it....and there were compliants etc....

and now here is the height...

there is a puja coming up at closet friend of theirs for navratri, and i have time of the month during that time. I told her i cannot join rest of the family should go. As i have mentioned before she does not go anywhere without me (aaaaaaaaaaaa....)

and here comes the change of rule...

that'd be your thirdday anyways, wash hair and u r fasting anyways for navratri...so one day == 2 days so it will be 6th day actually for u, so u should come....

    what?????????????? i m dumbfound....with MIL's theory

my DH had a good laugh too and i was surprised he did not raise flag that he would not like it...

all look for their convenience except us DILs

do you have any such story to share on convenience ?

If I were you or the OP in the other famous untouchability thread.. I would fast for 2 or 3 days with the max of my energy only to conclude that my periods for the rest of my life = no period, thus no untouchability anymore. How great.

You can fast or fake a fast as much as you want.. But its worth it

Also... Anyone to nominate your MILs for the next Nobel prize? It seems they can beat Einstein and all by their great theories.

Mine did not have any such theories. But her change in attitude was for society.

First 6 months of marriage, anything I touched those 4 days would get "spoilt" - pickle, curd, even the water in the water bottle.

First trip home after coming here, I was there in time for Karthikai (December). I got it the day before the pooja day. She actually told me to light the lamps in the pooja room, and also put kolam and light lamps everywhere. I was shocked, because even though I don't follow the don't touch thing, I stay away from pooja rooms for those days. My mother was aghast. The reason given was the neighbors would feel sad for her that her DIL is here, and she cannot light the lamps.

The only time I put my foot down that day was when she told me to go to one of the neighbor's houses for vethalai paaku. These people are super orthodox, and they keep saaligramam at home, and do Thevaram pooja. I managed not to go there though.

These days she keeps count of calendar days more than I do. But she is totally confused since she wakes up late, and by the time she comes downstairs the vilakku is on (if not me, then son does it before his pooja). She asks me around the time she thinks it is time and I just smile and say "all done" whether or not it is the truth :)

Once my cousin's MIL forced my cousin to come for a marriage, who otherwise is put on a untouchable mode. The reason her MIL gave was, since you are using tampons now, it can be counted as no period. Our entire family still hasn't successfully deciphered how using tampons has cancelled the periods.:idontgetit:. Any help
