The college days... Part 15


Ashika took her usual seat at the corner of the class. Among the loud voice, noises of the chairs and tables being pushed and pulled, the laughter, Ashika felt lonely.

Ashika for the first time felt the need to mingle with her classmates. She hesitated as she was doubtful of the response.

"Wouldn't it be awkward to start a conversation all of the sudden" was her worry."But how do I create a situation she thought." throughout the lectures without noting down any points said by the professor.

During the break, she saw Akshay getting out the classroom with his group of friends. Ashika wasn't familiar with them, the names was the only detail she knew.

Ashika opened a blank page of her book and started sketching out pictures from her imagination, it all looked gloomy-sadness filled the pictures. She shut the book and thought to herself," Maybe, Akshay was right, I really need a change!"

She thought of leaving her classroom and walk around the campus. She decided to start with a cup coffee and headed towards the canteen.

On entering the canteen she saw Akshay standing with Amal and Ruby. She couldn't get Akshay's attention as Amal had partly covered him.

She got into the canteen and walked to the counter which was crowded, Ashika waited patiently for her turn and at the meantime looked around for familiar faces.

"Yes, what is your order?" asked the mid-aged man at the counter. To which she replied, "One coffee please and held out a RS 500 note."

"Rs 500?" I don't have change said the man irritated and refused to take the money."Ask your friends" He said lifting his hand to the crowd behind her."

Ashika got away from the queue behind her, letting others to place their order and once again searched for familiar faces.

"I can go and ask Akshay and his friends." she thought but hesitated before she made a move.

They were standing at the same place; she walked towards them to see Sera had joined them too.

"Excuse me" said Ashika in a childlike voice. Amal turned back at the voice and she got the others attention too.

"Actually, I was wondering if any of you would have change for RS 500" asked Ashika sounding hesitated.

Amal took his arms which were placed on Vishal's shoulder to take out his wallet. Akshay looked puzzled to see Ashika and didn’t make an effort to speak to her.

Ashika caught Ruby looking at her and looked away pretending she wasn't once Ashika looked back.

Amal took out few currencies and said looking at Ashika, "There you go!"
"Oh thanks a lot.", said Ashika with a smile and exchanged her RS 500 note for the currencies.

Before Ashika turned to leave, Vishal called out, "Hey, count the change, Amal might cheat." and chuckled. Ashika just smiled and ignored Vishal's advice.

Once Ashika left, Amal turned back at Vishal saying" You think you are funny by any chance?" To which Vishal answer was a louder laugh.

"She doesn't seem to like us", said Sera to the group. "Who cares?" She looked at me but didn't even bother to say-hi. Arrogant woman!" said Ruby waving her hand up in the air while she spoke.

"Ahh..Why didn't you speak?" questioned Vishal. Vishal made sense for once thought Akshay.

"I don't have a need to speak to such people she has ignored me every time I tried talking." said Ruby sounding irritated."She thinks that she is really pretty", said Sera trying to support Ruby.

"Oh and she is really pretty", said Amal to which Akshay couldn't help himself from agreeing.

The College Days- Part 16 A

After the chit-chat, Akshay and the others was once again back to their seats for more but they were soon interpreted by a loud cough from their lecturer Mr. Iqbal.

Amal being uninterested and sleepy with the boring lecture, took out a chewing gum pack out of his pockets to keep himself awake.

He slowly pulled out one from the pack and waited until Mr.Iqbal turned to the blackboard to slide it into his mouth, once his mission was accomplished; he offered the pack to Akshay who was seated just beside him.

Akshay took one from the pack and soon it was noticed by Vishal and Vishal called out "Hey! Me too!!" The voice seemed to be audible to Iqbal.

Iqbal being irritated by his lecturer being interpreted screamed out loud
"What is going on there?" Vishal was by then stretching himself to grab a chewing gum.

"Amal dropped the pack of chew gum and said: "Nothing sir,he just wanted a pen" in a polite manner.

"You people..If you have no interest in my lecturer please clear out the class, don’t distract me and the others!!" screamed out Mr. Iqbal staring at them in an irritated tone.Amal had no clue how Mr.Iqbal had read his mind.
"No, sir. Please continue' said Amal.

I wouldn't attend the class if I had enough attendance", murmured Ruby, to which the other agreed.

Iqbal reminded the class about the exams which would be commenced in 2 weeks before he left the class.

"Ahh!! Exams again" exclaimed Akshay. "Did anyone of you start with the preparation", asked Akshay though he was sure with the answer.

"Ohh.. not at all!" was Ruby's spontaneous reply. "Yea, same here" said Sera.

"Anyways, got study leave after a week, will try to study duration that time", said Vishal not sounding so sure.

"How much will we study in that one week!", said Sera.

"I'm going home for the study leave, it's been so long", said Amal.
"Aww!! Little boy is missing his mommy." said Sera trying to sound sarcastic.

"You wouldn't understand how it is to stay in the hostel and the food-ah let's just not talk about it", said Amal.

After few minutes of silence, Akshay asked: "So you going to start studying once you reach home?"

"If I ever get time after hogging mom's special dishes", said Amal with a smile.

"Hey! What are we still doing in the class that was our last period", reminded Sera."Oh yeah, exams tension just made me forget that", said Vishal and winked! "Yea right!", said the others and laughed out!

Once they got out of the class. Amal and Vishal rushed to the canteen to get a snack for their tea.

Sera and Ruby was talking to one of the lecturers. Akshay didn't want to join their conversation and decided to wait at the college gate till Amal and Vishal was back with their snacks.

On the way Akshay saw Ashika, as usual standing alone. He smiles at her as he passed. "Hey!", said Ashika to which Akshay turned back.

"Yes!" he said sounding curious."

"Well, nothing much I..I just wanted to thank you for the advice to make new friends." said Ashika.

"Ohh okk, you're welcome!",said Akshay in a modest tone.

"...and I'm planning to work on it!" said Ashika with a smile.

"Ohh!! That is great." said Akshay.

Anyways, I have to leave now, my brother might be waiting." said Ashika and left.

Akshay turned back to see Ruby and Sera watching him.

The College Days... 16 B

Akshay tried to stay calm as he walked towards Ruby and Sera. Sera raised her eyebrows and asked, "What were you talking to her?"

Well.. nothing, she just asked me how the exam preparations are?" said Akshay.

Akshay had not planned such an answer but was glad for some reason.

"Ohho! Someone seems so concerned", teased Sera while Ruby ignored him. Akshay just gave an innocent smile as an answer.

Ah! There comes Amal and Vishal", said Akshay directing to them as an attempt to change the topic.

"Alright guy, we are leaving", said Vishal. Akshay said bye to them and the girls too.

Ruby gave a slight nod and said "bye" in a low tone, Akshay knew there was something wrong.

A week of class passed away soon and it was the last day before the study leave.

Akshay caught Ashika's beautiful shining eyes looking at him twice during the lecture, he was excited and wondered if she wanted to say something.

The gang decided to bunk the last period and head to the library in order to collect some helpful notes.

Amal and Akshay took a seat browsing through the past question paper while the others went in search for the required books.
They were back with a pile of books and Akshay sorting the books, while Amal read the questions loud enough for the gang.

Akshay divided the books among themselves and they soon started jotting out few points.

Once they were content with the notes collected, Ruby asked "Hey guys! What about watching a movie today?"

Vishal shut the book close, like he heard the most awaiting question and screamed out: "I'm in!" to which the librarian responded, "Shhh!!!"

"Shh.. softly", said Ruby and added I would like a break before the exams. "Me too", said Amal and Sera.

All of them turned to Akshay for a yes!- To which Akshay said "Well, guys I'm not so sure hence Dad would be home today."

"Come on man!!", said Ruby. "I'll try to come", said Akshay not sounding so assuring.

"So, are you guys done taking notes?" asked Amal."Yeahh! That is enough", said Sera clamming the book. Akshay and the others stood to leave.

Akshay walked faster to peep into the classroom to get a glance of Ashika.

To his surprise, he spotted her speaking to one of their classmate at the doorway and waited patiently behind her for his turn.

Once their conversation was over, he whispered "So someone has taken my advice seriously and looked away with a playful smile."

Ashika quickly turned to see the smile on Akshay's face and said "Hmphh" and a smile as an answer.

Akshay was forced to walk as the passage got crowded and Ashika followed.

She pushed away the hair which fell on her face and looked up at Akshay and asked, "So are you all set for the exams?"

"Well, haven't prepared much", said Akshay and asked "How about you?"

Not really happy with the preparations, have managed to finish half way through each subject.

"Hey! That's great", said Akshay appreciating her.
