Dear Friends,

My husband is getting transferred to Qatar soon (Mostly be in April/May). Presently we are in Saudi (Dammam). We are from Tamilnadu. We have a 21 months old daughter.

Company would provide a 3 Bedroom full furnished compound accommodation in Doha. His office is in Salwa industrial area but he need not go there daily( he can work from home for 2 days in a week).

I request members to let me know, in which area we can get good compounds with good greenery, all amenities like covered parking, walk area, back yard, gym, pool, kids play area, secured and calm neighbourhood.

Cost of house boy/maid for 6 days a week @ 1 hour/day.
Cost of groceries (in saudi it is around 1000 SAR for a month..includes rice, pulses, vegetables, fruits, spices). will it be the same there.

Any special Indian shops you get fresh vegetables,fruits... usually Lulu here is becoming expensive day by day.

Cost of kinder garden and location of the schools.
Is it easy to get admission in Indian schools.
Experienced people can share the list of "Top 5" schools there.

Do IL members have regular family meets in week ends ( once or twice in a month).
What are the usual time pass for Indian families.
Heard there are good vegetarian hotels..my husband is very happy on hearing this..

Is there any group where people chant slokas. I heard Qatar is more accommodative to all religions as long as it does not bother people of other faiths. Is that true?

My husband's request is - which money transfer center offer better rates to India with a quick service.

Looking forward to meet and get support /advice from IL members in Doha.

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards
Akila

Hello Akila, Sharmila has given very good suggestions on everything you have asked for.

Here is my opinion on the qns you have asked for:

=====)You will get good compound villas in Abu hamour/Al Waab/Al Aziziya /Ain Khalid area.Abu Hamour is near to MES ,Rajagiri and DMIS(Indian) schools. And there are very good compound apartments and villas also in that area.

=====) I have a Nepali boy coming to my house everyday to clean the house. He charges 20 Qars per day for 2-3 hours of work per day.He does house cleaning, mop, dish washing , bathroom cleaning everyday. He said he would do clothes pressing for extra 200 Qars(which I do not avail now). These guys would charge for transportation too but since mine stays across the building he does not charge much.Since you are looking for compound apt/villa , you it will be easier for you to get a cleaner boy.And I have heard Qatar maid service does an excellent job too. They charge 40-45 Qars per mnth but you can bargain for 30-35 if you avail their facilities on a regular basis.

=====)Like Sharmila said, Indian Super market is good. And there is a vegetable market too where you would find fresh vegetables (near Abu Hamour area).Qatar has a much higher cost of living than Saudi.I have heard that the Al-mara milk which costs 12 Qars here is only 5 Saudi currency.Yes, you would have a surprise on that area here.

=====)Schools ….I do not have anything to add to what Sharmila has said. And she has been hunting for a while for school now and she(and few other ILites) knows the current scenario better.

=====)Yes, we have IL meet-ups though not as frequently as you have mentioned.Come here and let us have fun.friendssmiley

=====)Qatar is accommodative of all religions as long as we are not LOUD about it.Qataris are generally tolerant and accommodative.

=====)There are lot of exchanges here.Your hubby might get a good idea about this from his colleagues.

See you here and good luck on all packing stuffs...
