DH and I just returned from a foreign trip and we got small gifts for both our parents and siblings. My parents accepted things so gladly and have already started using them too. We gave gifts to my inlaws yesterday and today during lunch MIL comments that her gift is of no use and how we shouldnt be spending money on buying gifts unnecessarily and if at all we want to give, we should give something which can be used. She even said how FIL is not going to use the wallet and no need to waste money.
Gift for MIL was a set of 5 pouches in different sizes
Gift for FIL was a wallet
and a box of Lindt chocolates for both of them.

Pls tell me if we were wrong or if they are aliens! It's pissed me more because i wasted 20 mins in the shop trying to pick the perfect set of pouches for her.Witsend

I presented a costly saree to mil and she commented on how wortheless it is.That was the last time I got her a gift. I gifted many sarees to my mom ( without others knowledge) and I can see my mom's face is so happy whenever she wears it. I too feel so happy to see my mom wearing the sarees that I presented her with pride .

Same here i was told by my husband to gift his Mom , when he is not around ...... ha ha ha , so i thought the best time will be when he is out of country and i took her to big Jewellry shop "Joy alukkas" and bought her nice gold studs with ruby and emerlad which costed about 15k . Finally when he is returnd from US after is a week from that time , she said the screw is bent while taking bath and its not strong , why dont you buy a more thicker screw even it is costing more she wanted me to buy and finally she wants to change ..... fickle minded Inlaws ,,,, carzy laday. I didnt give up i told her this will cost me more expensive i will get this repaired for you...........heeeeee , then she was quite.

No matter what we buy for my MIL she will not be happy...even if it is exactly what she said she wanted. We were in India for Diwali a few years ago. She asked the neighbour to bring her sari and explained that she wanted exactly the same. So we went to Nalli in Chennai and were happy to get exactly what she wanted, in the colour she wanted. For my mother, I bought a traditional pattu sari as I know that she would never be comfortable in anything but cotton or pattu. The sari for my mom was about Rs. 20 more than hers. For this one reason she complained. Nowadays we go to the shop in India, and my husband will pick the first sari the salesman puts out. His rationale is that no matter what we get her, she is going to find fault and go and exchange it. So why bother wasting time on it.
My last trip to India, I bought her a sari. I told her I was on a budget so she could not look at saris that were 10K (she was dreaming of that). She took 4 hours and got one sari. we went home and she was not sure if she liked it and i was not in the mood to spend another 3 hours at Nalli. So FIL and I cut off the blouse piece and I gave it to the tailor for stitching :) Now no way she can return it. She wore it and kept complaining that she did not really like it....But honestly? Who the hell cares?

I gifted her a pouch once, and she asked me what to keep in it. I casually replied you could keep anything in it, say coins, any of your medicines, etc, etc.... She caught on to one word of what I said "medicines". She did not say anything to me, just said "Thank You". The minute I went into the kitchen she tells her son, "I don't want this gift, what does she think of herself? She got me a pouch to keep my medicines, she means that I am sick and should continue to have medicines. She wants me to fall sick and keep eating medicines...." :bonk Husband told her that she could tell the same thing to my directly or throw the gift if she did not want it, but not involve him.

However, she doesn't like to be the bad one so she never told me anything. She threw it under the couch, I found it a few days later when I was vacuuming the apartment. I learned my lesson and never got anything again for her.... So you are not alone...
