Allergies in dogs..

Just like us, dogs too can be allergic to certain types of food. These allergies vary from dog to dog. When a dog is allergic, you will notice one or more of the following symptoms.

• Lack of interest in food
• Indifferent and apathetic to environment
• Less active than usual
• Undue shedding
• Dull and watery eyes
• Lack of pigmentation on nose
• Ruptures on the skin and general unhealthy appearance of coat
• Liver and kidney damage

But what causes these allergies? An allergy could be triggered off by any one or more of the following factors

• Hormonal imbalance
• Preservatives and additives to commercial dog food
• Feeding on certain meats and food stuffs(for instance the dog may be allergic to horse meat)

Consult the vet to manage the problem of hormonal imbalances. Observe closely the food types to which your dog seems to react negatively to. (he may spurn the food, he may throw up after eating, or he may suddenly appear inactive and dull). Identify the specific ingredient that is triggering such a reaction and avoid feeding him the same in future.


Food additives that cause allergy are usually found to be

• Ethoxyquin
• BHA (Butylated Hydroxianisole)
• BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

These are the additives that are usually included in ready foods to preserve the fat and prolong their shelf life. Other additives are propylene glycol, sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite. For some dogs these chemicals are reported to cause a range of health disorders.


When you shop for dog food, look closely at the ingredients on the packaging. When you locate food stuffs that have very little or no additives, buy buy them in small quantities (unless you have adequate freezer space) as these foods will not have a long shelf life.

But I don't have any idea.. being it a poision when mixed with food, but I know dog's hair is allergic to some people...
