    Hello mommies,
This is not a toddler problem, but a problem more to do with me. My DS is now 14 mos old. He has never been a great sleeper, and every time he teeths or hits a growth spurt, any sleep routine that I tried to put into place goes for a full toss. In the process, I am going insane..literally. I work from home, have a day time nanny to look after him, and I take care of him during other times. Hubby works long hours, but of late has been putting him to sleep, so I am getting some relief. But DS wakes up often in the night, and is fussy and needs to be rocked, walked and just when you think he is asleep will wake up again and the cycle continues. He has been teething, and I give him homeo for it, which does give his relief. He also has again become very gassy, and it hits only after 11 pm. I assume because he is trying more new foods, so his tummy is getting adjusted to the new things. This causes his sleep to be disturbed, mine and hubbys too. Hubby seems to be able to cope much more easily that I am.
I was checked for low iron levels and it turns I do have low iron, hence the fatigue. I am working on getting it up through tabs and diet. I also have recently tried to start yoga again, which I was very very regular with pre pregnancy. Every time a routine gets disrupted, I go crazy, especially in the night, and I keep cribbing and crabbing in the night, and get very angry, which I’m sure is not good for my little one. I feel very guilty in the morning, and resolve that I will not do so again, but the same cycle continues.
I used to be able to cope with it very easily before. There was a period between when he was 5 mos to 8 mos where he would not sleep the whole night, and I seemed to have managed perfectly well. Why am I finding this difficult? I am very uptight and am not able to relax, and take it easy, and in the process not able to enjoy my little one.
Please help. Any advice, or if any of you has gone through something similar, how did you cope with this? I am trying my best to work my way through this, but the anger and fatigue is now getting old, and I am just at my wits end trying to come with strategies to cope with it.
    Thank you in advance.

vmtaurus, hugs to you. I know exactly how hard it is as I have sailed the same boat recently.
One question though when does his last nap for the day end? At that age, they should have been transitioned to 2 naps a day. The afternoon nap should end on or before 4 PM for them to be tired enough by 8 PM. Normally, when they are exhausted, they sleep well though it may not be the case with yours as he has always been this way.

Another question is, what does his usual night time routine include?

Please go through the below threads as well, they will help you a lot.

    Hi dear,

Can totally relate with your problem. Lack of sleep can wreak terrible havoc in our moods and day to day activities. I based my sleep routine loosely on the baby whisperer's. there are lots of tips if you look for baby whisperer online.

    Another thread that might help

There are always setbacks once your routine is established. My dd is over 2. We trained her when she was 9 mo. however after a bout of viral illness, we are back to square 1 last week. I'm confident though that staying consistent with her daily routine and sleep routine we can pull her back to sleeping all night. Sure you can too... Good luck.

What you are experiencing is just part and parcel of being a mother.
You already have got some great suggestions.
But i see that all this is taking a toll on your health.Yes fatigue is a symptom of low iron levels in body. And i hope you have also got your thyroid levels checked.
For low iron level other than tablets..beetroot,carrots,greens help....i too am anaemic and am recovering :)

my son use to get up in the middle of night and cry, we don't know that time what it was but I use to give him some gas medicine and put him to sleep, he seems okay as with gas they cant tell but its nothing wrong to give them one dose. as we can see when they pass gas, its okay to give them... either it can be gas or he is worried or sometimes if the diaper leak they don't cry continuously but do get up in the middle.if you are breast feeding you have to watch out what you eat too because few foods mom eat also give kids gas problem.

Thank you so much for your replies mommies.

Rakhi: He was taking two naps. He is a night owl, and sleeps only after 12:00 AM. I had got him used to sleeping between 10 and 11 PM, but one teething episode brought him right back to square one. In the past few days, after I wrote this thread, he has suddenly transitioned to one nap in the day! He used to sleep 2-3 hours spread out into two naps...but is now doing only one nap for 2 hours. This nap is usually around 3-4 PM. He is still sleeping only after 12:00 AM, but had gas, so maybe that kept him awake. Today again he seems to have bounced back to his old routine..this was roughly his routine before this sleep thing hit.
Between 9 AM and 10 AM - Wake up
10:30 AM - Bfast, bath, play
1:00 PM – Lunch, play and then Nap (sometimes he would nap as soon as he eats, sometimes would play awhile and then nap)
3:00-4:00 PM - Wake up and 6 oz. milk
5:00 PM – play and snack (fruit, or anything else available)
    6:00-7:00 PM – Nap
    7:30 – 8:00 PM – Dinner and play
10:00 PM to 11:00 PM – 6 on. milk and bed. There is no routine here, as he is a natural fighter for sleep. No matter how tired he is, he would NOT fall asleep on his own. So, rocking, walking and singing to sleep are the only thing that works so far.
I guess I’m just a little tired of this constant bouncing between routines. There has never been a consistency in his routine since the day he was born, no matter how hard I try.
Guesshoo..thanks for stopping by with your kind words.
Dinny: I do ensure I eat a lot of iron rich foods daily so that my energy levels come back up soon.
Breeze: I do give him colic aid for the gas.

I am working on my anger issues, but I think a good nights sleep will work wonders. Till then coffee and green tea is helping me tide through this phase. :|

VMtaurus, how about waking him up 1 hour early tomorrow? i.e at 8 AM? I am guessing he is going to be grumpy and all but see if waking him at 8 AM will get him to take an afternoon nap at 1 PM and wake up at 3 PM.

    just a suggestion...

i tried it... dont allow him to sleep max after 6 p.m. evening... if he doesnt sleep after 5 p.m. its good but six is also ok... my son now 21-month old started taking one nap during day time... though he wont sleep until h e play with his dad... he sleeps around 11 p.m. mostly... wakes up 8-10 a.m. (varies each day)... i dont allow him now also to sleep in the evening... he sometimes plays so much that he falls asleep by himself on cot or sofa or on our lap!
