    Hi IL,

I am a regular visitor around, and have been noticing a lot of threads. I am into small-time artificial fashion jewellery making - taking classes and such. Recently, a friend of mine( and many others in IL) were telling me to start onlien tutorials. I was wondering how feasible it would be to do the same. With this era of googling, and with a person like me( who googles everything) - this is a silly question - but really, whats the procedure to launch a site?

Before that, I will jus tel what I know about it. Heard all these words here and there....but coudl someone jus make a little bit of sense to me on these??

Design - Hosting - Domain name - Registration - Payment gateway - Shoppin Cart - Yahoo SMall Biz - Google Ads - Blogger - Maintenance - RSS feeds - etc etc!!

Am a novice in this area :) So HELP!!

    HI

Am starting my own business and in the midst of getting my website done so what info i have given below is knowledge acquired for the same... hope it helps... If you are planning to take classes- creating a website is unneccessary- you can give online tutorials using software like Skype which is a free download. A website would be a wonderful concept if your planning to market your product even then it is more suitable if your having a bulk lot available with you.. Getting a website done basically requires for you to choose a name for your company under which you plan to market your product, then getting a website domain registered under the same name, for you to host this website (as in to load pics etc you need space which is where the Hosting part comes into pic) usually the hosting and domain registration can be done online through a dealer. As for the designing, it is best to go through a professional web desinger who can create the website to suit your requirements. Usually for about a 300MB space, with domain registration , and web designing it may come upto 15-20 depending again on whom you contact to get this done.

For online pay facility you need to be registered for E Business, and also getting this done will cost a min of 60K atleast excluding the cost of website. Hope this helps...

    Hi Archana,

I can give some inputs here to you. Quite a lot of things to do before you start an online tutorial. Also, all those words that you have mentioned have their own purpose & depth of work.

If you are keen to have a site, start off first by getting some basics:

    1) For anyone to have a site, you should first have a domain registration done. Domain is something like yahoo.com, google.com etc. Now depending on the nature of your business or work the domain extension will vary - like .edu, .org, .com etc etc. So you need to choose a name & domain extension for your line of business.

    2) Once you have chosen you need to check its availability & there are numerous providers with whom you can register the name. You should also choose your package of registration like annual or monthly payment, how many email ids are given etc etc.

    3) Once registered, you have the website like Google - just registered for you and no one can use it. Then you should start work on building the website. That's a separate topic on its own.

    4) Before building the site, try to answer questions like what is the purpose of the site? What do you expect anyone who visit your site to know or benefit from etc.? Such answers will lead to you what should be the contents and how it should be etc.

    5) Once built you can host (that's a separate technical process) on the domain that you have registered.

    6) After this there are other steps like Search Engine Optimization (that's to top the google search), RSS Feed (could be part of the site contents) etc.

I would suggest that you approach the whole web world in a step-by-step way, because you are new and each step will definitely cost you!!!

My suggestion is if you are keen to have a site, have a basic one then keep improving on it and slowly move towards your vision of "online tutorial".

Topics like payment gateway, shopping cart etc. are going to cost you!!!

If you need one urgently.....try this:

Go to Google Page Creator (hope you have a google account).
Google gives a very basic template to build your site.
Choose a domain name and start building this site (not more than a page)
    Publish the site.

This is the first basic step you can do.....and have it lying there until you are ready with a better version. This is free!!! :)

Online tutorials - can also be done through Skype-to-Skype with webcam.

Let me know if you need more info!!!

    All the best!

    Cheers
    Jenz

    Hi Archana,

Here is a step by step guide for you.

    1) First go to any reliable hosting service.

    2) You can also book the domain there itself. I dont suggest booking the domain in a seperate place other than the hosting site. Booking the domain and hosting from the same site saves you a lot of work like linking the domain to your hosting account.

    3) First book the domain - something like archanajewels.com

    4) Then look for the best hosting plan service that suits you. I suggest you go for less than 5$ a month plan. Thats best for individual entrepreneurs.

    5) Hosting sites offer a Site Builder for free that allows newbies (and literally anyone) to create a professional looking website in a few steps with easy wizards.

    6) However you need to do some homework in this case when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) This will assure that your site comes at the top in search engine results.

    7) You can market your website by starting a blog and updating it regularly (probably once a week) You can offer free small tips in your blog and ask the visitor to visit the site for more details where you can offer the main courses.

    8) The trick now is to get traffic to your blog and site - go to forums and market your website. Go to jewelry related forums and communities and participate in the discussions and sign your replies with your name and site.

I am also a newbie in these things! ;-)

    Cheers,
    Lakshmi

I am going to tell you "How to have your own website for LESS MONEY "

If I could do it then you can do it too.
Check out my site. Google "Supreme Spice" . I designed this whole site on my own. Added PayPal to it (which was ridiculously easy and is much cheaper ) and I was ready to sell.

I bought the template for my site online for only $35 (the one that suited my products. Colors , etc) and started designing using FrontPage software.

It took me about a week to do the whole site. And note that I have very very basic knowledge of HTML.

I pay $22/year to host my site.

Do not worry about SEO and all now. Getting your site on the first page on Google, yahoo , etc requires patience and work. If you google for spice extracts, my site comes up on the first page. I did not pay a single penny to anyone to do any SEO or anything. Its all my own hard work and persistence that has paid off :)

If you have any other questions or still very confused (the way I was when I was starting) then send me a private message and I will be more than happy to help you.

    Cheers,
    Anjali

    Hey to all!!

Thanks a ton! I was also wondering what is the need to host a site, when tutorials can be done through Skype. Even on the tutoring part, I am not too keen primarily because of the fact that it is time consuimg, and I am not quite sure of the response. It does require a lot of work from my end to find if it is a feasible venture. So as of the moment, not really keen on taking classes online.

But yes, all this knowledge surely helps. I also did some googling on my bit. Yahoo Small Business has a offer, short term entry offer, where in they provide a domain for Rs. 1200 or so. Plus, payment gateway costs around Rs. 8000 and Shopping cart, around Rs. 12000. All this, is actually not required for my kind of business and is needed when i take up this completely and decide to diversify.

Thanks once again, for lovley responses!!

    Anjali,

I was infact looking at your site two days back. Was looking for something on health foods in US, and ended up in your site. A well made, neat site.

Also, a great concept to sell spice extracts in the US. From the prices you quote - I guess it is pretty affordable and can be done at ease.

Great going!! I will keep in touch with you
