Puni - the US has just as high a rate of C-sections as India. Please do look at the statistics before you generalize. I agree that in general the C-section rate all over the world is high and increasing but to single out Indian doctors is not fair. Not all of us are money-minded. I am not a gynec but i do resent it when someone generalizes without knowing the facts.

Sunkan - "Trainees" as you call them are actually doctors who have finished their MBBS and are specializing in OBGYN. They are legally entitled to perform episiotomies. I have no idea abt the ins and outs of this particular case but I dont think you were in the delivery room - so you dont either. Please dont scare pregnant women unnecessarily.

I am not defending all doctors here. I agree that mistakes happen sometimes but tarring all doctors with the same brush is not the solution.

    Hi Vanathi,

After having delivered my boy with a wonderful doctor in Bangalore I cannot disagree with you at all:) I think anywhere there are good, better and best doctors. What we call in Tamil 'kai rasi' (a lucky hand of the doctor.. which in a way speaks more of her/his experience and common sense while handling the patients). I have heard of very successful deliveries even under extreme complications in India and ending up with complications in foreign countries too. I'll give a small example.. last year while on vacation in India my son was playing and as normal for his age fell down and cut his chin. It needed few stitches. I took him to a hospital in Bangalore and the doctor was so damn efficient. When we returned to Germany (i was in dusseldorf then) his doctor checked the scar and said 'not a good job' :( now we live in Munich and I have a new doctor for him. This doctor has done volunteer work in developing countries (mostly africa) and also worked in the US. He said one should never generalise another doctor's work. He checked the scar and was the opinion that this was the best job done for the kind of cut. He also added that most times he found doctors in developing countries far more efficient despite the non-availibility of certain technologies.

And as for normal vs c-section, while developed countries do have restrictions because of insurance it's not always the case. Latha

    dear vanathi,
let me correct u before u conclude, my intention to write this here is to be careful so that they seek good doctors and with whom they can be comfortable asking or taking patience and then going in for delivery, these days many doctors are very careless and they give it to trainees, so this happens they may be full fledged doctors but never play with a woman's life, right, so it is better to be careful than regret later..how can we answer the woman who lost her married life, can we give it back all because of one carelessness, here i am just to tell them to seek appropriate attention and then go in for delivery..sunkan

    Dear Vanathi,

    Thanks much !!!

I 200% agree, every case is different and I bet most of the doctors put up all efforts to do the right thing first.. Not just in this field, everywhere, there are some mushrooms and we cannot generalize the entire community because of that :)

I guess, as a woman, you gather as much as information as possible and then its fate.. whatever happens got to play along I guess :) and I hope sunkan's post is one such - an information.

    Thanks Nandhu and Latha.

Sunkan - if you meant it as info then its fine and I'm sorry if I over-reacted. But there are atleast 3 people who said they were scared after reading the post and thats why I thought I should point it out. There are umpteen stories of medical mistakes. In my view its not a good thing to read abt those when you are sick/pregnant/need treatment or surgery because these things are mostly out of our control and there's no point in getting scared abt things we cannot predict/control.

    hi...
i had a normal delivery with episiotomy....episiotomy is done to avoid jagged tears in the vagina which would be very difficult to stitch up...a neat cut can be stitched up better than a zigzag wound isnt it...maybe in some cases improper ways of episiotomy may cause loosening of muslces...in my case i have had no problems after delivery....i agree that there are good and bad docs everywhere...it is not fair to generalise...but on the whole we indian women should have better awareness about all aspects of reproductive health in a scientific way than going by hearsay...
we should know what to expect before each stage of pregnancy, delivery and child care. it is good to accumulate as much knowledge as possible and discuss the pros and cons of every method used.....we should feel free to ask our docs why and how various methods are done...and the docs should oblige and explain these things so that we can make well informed choices....

    Hi Aadhusmom,
I am not saying that there less c-sections in US. I mentioned that doctors would try maximum for normal delivery. They don't do c-section for money sake.
I hope, I cleared your doubt.

    Regards.

Yes, I agree with you... it is really pain ful after you get sliced.
You can't sit, walk or sleep. And healing time is also delayed as it is not exposed out and we constantly have bleeding.
It is quite painful days for 6 or more weeks.

Puni...dont you think that if two places have the same rate of C-sections then it means that the doctors in both places are behaving in the same way? If as you claim, American doctors ALWAYS wait for a normal delivery then logically the US should have one of the lowest C section rates in the world. It doesnt. So there is some flaw in your "facts".
I am not for debating which doctors are better. I only wanted to ask you not to brand all Indian doctors as money-minded - that is hurtful and very untrue.

    Vanathi.
