Plantscantalk and sokanasanah carried out a wonderful discussion on my favourite story :)

    in this thread http://www.indusladies.com/forums/r...y-parents-goofed-up-inputs-4.html#post2690079

I would be in tears and goosebumps when I used to tell this story to my Balvihar kids !!!

Sabari had been waiting for a very long time, everyday collecting fresh fruits, flowers, removing thorns on the paths and singing "Ram Ram when are you coming ??"

The entire forest used to resonate with the words "Ram Ram" as if waiting for Rama !!!

When Rama and Lakshmana entered the forest, they couldnt believe the sounds of the forest !!!

How did the deer sound like ?? - one kid would shout out "Ram Ram"
What did the roar of the tiger sound like ?? - an older kid would say "grrrrrrrrram grrrrrrrrrram"
When the owl hooted in the night, how did it sound? - "hhhhhrrrrrrrm hrrrrrrrrrrm"
How did the sparrows chirps sound? (pointing to the youngest and quietest kid) - "rm rm rm rm" (in high pitch)
What did the trees sound like in the wind - "sssssshhhhhhrwam shshhhhshram"
When the river flowed what did the water sound like - "wishrm wishrm"

And when the ashram students found Rama and Lakshmana walking - how did he come to Sabari and tell her - one of my students would invariably stand up and act out - running - "Sabari amma sabari amma your Rama has come"

And one of the older kids would act out Sabari - running towards Rama - "oh my Rama you've come to me finally, I waited for so long !!!"

And then I would tell about the half-eaten fruits and her loving hospitality, how the deer and the tiger would stand next to each other in attention to Rama and the trees are bending to touch Rama with their leaves and flowers (all this is my imagination :))

Then the kids would act out Sabari tasting a sweet berry - "mmmm this one is sweet, here Rama you eat this" and then next the sour one - "yuck this is sour " and act as if throwing it away!!

At this juncture, "I threw it further than you" is always a competition with the kids !

And then some kids would act out Lakshmana eating a sour berry and Sabari not caring or worse, they would ask me if she gave the sweet berries to Rama and sour ones to Lakshmana :), and then I would tell the kids, "no children, Lakshmana was also important and Sabari definitely took care of his food too, but she had bhakti for her Rama and thats why the story emphasises Rama more than Lakshmana" :)

And here, I would add the fact that "If a person has true bhakti in their hearts they can never act wrong toward anyone"

Thanx plantscantalk and sokanasanah for reminding me of my favorite story and my little kids :)

On a different note, I read in a book - Aghora III by Robert Svoboda - it is believed that Queen Victoria was Sabari reborn, and thats why British rule was successful in India till she was the queen ?!?!?! Strange or true ??? !!!

ha ha ha, no Anita, no debate anymore, just enjoying my nostalgia with the balvihar kids (and my own when he used to listen to my stories, now DS8 just reads the stories, and seems to know more than me :))

it is believed that Queen Victoria was Sabari reborn, and thats why British rule was successful in India till she was the queen ?!?!?!

This is new ! Very strange indeed :)

Yeah Mindi, it used to be real fun, and you learn much more when you conduct these classes than what you teach them !!!

About Queen Victoria, I would like to know if any other book/author says such a thing !!!

Love your imagination, Hrastro, though in my heart i feel that to be in close proximity to the Lord, the 'animal' instincts might have been forgotten in the animals :) and hence it might be very true.

I also liked the kids' comments and acting out sounds with 'Ram' embedded in them. BTw, i think there is a very important lesson which they might have bestowed us with. This is nAmasmarana of the highest order :).

Is this balavihar same as balavikas?

    Thanx plantscantalk!

Kids always love stories with animals and their sounds and they need the lessons embedded in lots of imagination and stories and games !! And lots of NOISE and jumping around :)

Balvihar is Chinmaya's and Balvikas is Satya Sai's, but the values imparted are the same, the slokas and stories they relate are the same and the culture that is passed on is Ours !!!

I've shifted now and here, the Balvikas teachers are so good, so I send my son for Balvikas now, and just limit my story telling tendencies to holidays and kids birthday parties and picnics (some of the younger kids ask the parents, if HR aunty is coming, we'll attend the party/picnic !!!) I'll have namasmaranam disguised as stories and quiz games and vedic maths disguised as magic tricks :) and surya namaskar and vrikshasana a competition !!
