The whole of last year I was on maternity leave, leaving me with some time on my hands. So, I thought I would give a shot at Organic Gardening. Here are a few pictures, I had only chosen 3 verietes of Tomatos, Peppers (capsicum) and Hot Chili.

    Steps:

    1. Store the kitchen waste for 2 weeks in compost bags and then simply empty them in the hole and cover with the soil.

    2. Dig a small to medium hole in a corner of the backyard right after the last frost warning has passed and place a few twigs as bottom layer. This will help drain in the event of rain. Pour in the kitchen waste (exclude meat/bones as they attract pests). Give it a stir and cover with light layer or soil.

    3. After about 2 months, right in the beginning of summer, take a few pots and fill the pot with soil where you buried the compost. You might have to mix the soil a bit. Initially I thought there would be maggots and stuff like that but to my surprise, in 2 months the compost has pretty much absorbed with soil.

    4. Plant the plants and keep a cane for support. This step is important as waiting for the plant to grow and then keeping a cane might disturb the roots.

    5. Keep the pots in a place where they get at least 4 hours of direct sunlight.

    6. water everyday in summers and enjoy the fruit!!

I have been doing it for like 2 years. Tomatoes are my favorite thing to grow, fresh as the freshest tomato can be.

Thanks for stopping by Sahil. I love tomatoes too. Specially the early bird verity which comes out by end of June itself, while the others are far behind, like you can see the pictures.

Which kind do you usually sow/plant?

the plants amazingly healthy! Thank you for sharing the process so well. i have a huge compost bin way in the back, just out of courtesy to my neighbors I am not using it but have been thinking of other ways of composting and exploring as well. Now you just handed it to me and have motivated me as well.

I cannot wait to set my foot out there and feel the mud, gardening!
