Re: beestar vs kumon, what's your idea

I really appreciate you for finding this information for me.

I read and also showed my husband your experience with Kumon. I should definitely give more considerations before dropping Kumon.

The online study resources available today are getting really attractive and so much more convinient.

Thank you again for your effort and sharing so much with us.

Re: beestar vs kumon, what's your idea

    Hi Meena,

You are most welcome. Everybody have their own views/concerns about KUMON.
First of all, KUMON is not a tutoring center. It is an enrichment course in MATH and READING that lays the foundations. It does not boast of rigorously training your children in all aspects.
Infact, I have heard many people say that KUMON does not have many word problems or Geometry. It does have some basics of Geometry but not in depth.
For any types of problems, we need to be strong in our foundation ...in this case. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division..right?

That is where KUMON comes in. Later they deal with fractions, decimals, graphing, algebra I and II and so on with calculus at higher levels.

Sure they do have word problems too....but not many. But somehow i dont seem to mind that because I am happy that my children have very strong foundation skills in MATH and READING.

    Sorry for a long post.:)

    Thanks
    Jithiks(Krithika)

Re: Nice free online math service to share

    Hi Meena,

Good to hear about Beestar. I had no idea that such a website existed. I checked it out cursorily so can't say what the difference between this and Kumon is.

I will ask my friends who have older kids to see if they have used this site.

As for Kumon, my son who will be 6 in Aug has been going there for both Math and Reading since last year (just before he turned 5). He has benefitted a lot on both subjects. He has been going there for less than a year now so it could be that the course work gets monotonous as they progress. I don't know. So far I am liking it a lot.

But I will try the Beestar site myself and also ask around to see if anyone has tried it before and will post here if I get useful information.

Thanks for bringing this out here!

Kumon Or Chinese Math Or Giddeon

    hi,

I have a 4th grader who goes to Kumon for 10 months. Most of the time he gets frustrated for doing it. (He is on level D ). Two months he joined in Giddeon for reading and he is interested in doing it.

I have heard about chinese math is better than Kumon. But i have no idea about it. It looks like Giddeon math is similar to Kumon math. Could anybody tell me which one is better? or provide me details if you know about chinese math.

I'm so confused. Please help me! I'm in Dallas.

    Thanks!

Re: Kumon Or Chinese Math Or Giddeon

    Hi Inimai,

I already posted a lot of information on KUMON in many threads before.

    Here you go....

Wanted to give some information and tips abt KUMON.

I wanted to let you all know, that i have been sending my sons to Kumon for the past 7 yrs ( my first son) and 5 years (my second son). KUMON has been very helpful and really enriched my childrens education in both MATH and READING.

I am happy to share that both my children are placed in Advanced classes in their school. I completely owe my thanks to KUMON.

Also, I have seen the centers in many states like california,Florida and now in Virginia. The standard is the same but the fees will definitely differ from state to state.

Since you mentioned that your son is in level D in 4th grade...they must be doing Division i guess.

Moreover, Kumon is repetitive work and lays foundation for all the hard math that follows in higher grades.

Right now, my first son is in 7th grade and he is doing J level in math and L level in Reading. My younger son is in 4 th grade and he is doing H level in math and FII level in Reading.

Both of them are placed in Gifted programmes in their respective schools...!

    will post more...

    Cheers
    Krithika

Re: Kumon and Beestar for kids

My child used Kumon for a while. I feel its price is high over time. We live in Texas. After the initial evaluation/registration fee of $150, Kumon charges $100 per subject per month. What is the price in your area?

I now start my child on Beestar (Beestar.org - Math and Reading for Kids)

It offers free weekly math practices, including word problems. We like it so far. Other Beestar programs such as English language arts/reading, science are just $20-$30 per semester. They look very attractive. Anyone uses Beestar here and comment?

    Thanks.

    Linda

    Re: Kumon and Beestar

Kumon and beestar.org are very different.

Kumon focuses on practicing calculations. Repeating practice and a lot of worksheets. It helps your child build a solid math foundation.

Beestar is more on problem solving. Its free weekly math provides many word problems. Most children like Beestar better, because its problems are fun and related to real life. Beestar has reading, science, and social studies as well, but they are not free.
