Thanks Syamala, for your feedback. And yes, what you mentioned is quite correct. Believe me, its not just the sacrifice angle that I wrote about. Its like, our life is more meaningful when we enable others in our own possible way. We are more or less flourescent I guess and our good acts are the light that makes us more visible and valuable. Thanks. -rgs

    Dear RGS,
    That's a beautiful post......
I remember the coal fueled water boiler....which was always an interesting thing to watch in those days..........
    Your analogy is beautiful......
    All coals are useful.....
Some to iron a shirt...some to cook food.....some to heat water....
And a few.......who were destined to stay longer buried under the earth, turn to diamonds and adorn the crowns of deities......
A great post with points to reflect and ponder as we are approaching a new year......:thumbsup
    Thank you......:)

Beautiful feedback KNBG. Regarding coals turning to diamonds -

Perhaps sorrow strengthens an individual to be very hard and not break down. In tamil, the word "vairam" also signifies a great strength as well, as diamond is one of the hardest.

    A different one now:

As long as you are like coal,
You will be burnt by others.
But if you strive for a goal,
    Withstanding rough weathers

    And achieve it, you are
    Then viewed as a diamond.
Will you be a piece of coal or
    That rare sparkling diamond?

    Dear RGS,

I thought you are too young to have used the coal stove... as those days the kerosene stove was popular.... hahahahahahahaha... Just pulling legs my friend...

It is infact a jolly exercise to ignite the coal stove... also the aroma of the food will always be different and great... My man... You are making me hungry and feel wanting for good sambar/rasam satham.... Where will I go...

Just I am looking at this way... Those days the kartha of the joint family... or the head or the father... is like the coal... He burns himself for the well being of the family... Going out and earning etc... He spreads the heat for the well being of his family... Like cooking the food... Anybody approaches the family with wrong intentions... the coal burns them away.... At the end of the day... Like the smell of the food... The family flourishes and smell good....

Those days are gone... With the scientific growth the human tnedencies also changes... We see in paper... Father raping the daughter... Killing relatives for wealth and what not.... The concept of family... sacrifice and all are gone... Today, it is me and myself.... hahahahahahaha....

    Sorry for the deviations....

    Veda

You are welcome to add more variety dear Veda Sir. And yours is interesting to read as well. Not just the kartha, but also the other elders and the mom too, put their wishes last. Lack of money is one thing, but even when they had the money, they did not go for their own wishes. There are numerous examples to quote from just my family itself. And yes, now we are on the "Why not myself?", mode. And today's family consists of me, wife and our children. But when it comes to fulfilling the desires, its always "Me first!". You are right. Thanks for your feedback. -rgs

First of all RGS, Congratulations on being nominated to FP by Vijima!

Reading the snippet brought various old Tamil movie scenes to my mind. Tamil movies specialised in showing self effacing and sacrificing heroes aplenty those days! Your poem and your post are indeed impressive. Even I am reminded of a candle like Pushpavalli Srinivasan mentioned, which like coal, burns away showing light to others and thus removing darkness from their lives and in turn, burns itself away! There were numerous references also to this in the songs though I am unable to think of any to quote here!!

Recengly, thanks to another online portal, I came across this clip and this guy (Gautam) is an epitome of your coal! Watch it, you will certainly enjoy!

Thanks Kamla, for your appreciation. I will definitely see the clip, though I don't watch this program nowadays.
Besides, sacrifice is not just the only angle that I talked about. Sorry if you find this a bit cliched. -rgs

Wonderful post. This led me to think in a different direction and about transformation.

We are in the middle of a transformative period experiencing dramatic paradigm shifts and leaps in the evolution of human consciousness itself. Our world itself may fundamentally be the same, yet our perspectives are expanding and changing. The several thoughts shared as posts to your thread is itself an example including this one!

'Coal' is again an example of this 'transformation' process, transformation from peat to coal (coalification) and then coal to ash (combustion) and the recycle process goes on. What a wonderful space, that nothings gets wasted and everything gets transformed :)

Many thanks for your nice feedback, Aspire. And you have elevated this post to a transformation. And it beautifully fits in, thanks to your brilliance. And yes, we are back to our school physics which says "energy can never be created nor destroyed; but can be transformed". Doesn't it apply to spiritual sense too? :) -rgs

Srinivasan dear a very thought provoking post which brought memories of olden days when cooking was done in kalchatti and Eeyachombu. Sambhar done in Kalchatti and Rasan in eeyachombu used to taste so yummy. You have written such a wonderful post and a wonderful poem about Coal. After reading it I went and nominated it but was waiting for the apt words to write. Now also I am not so happy with my fb. Sometimes I dont know what to write. To tell the truth those times I wait for others to give fb and then give fb
