There are various kinds of translations available for the Gita verses. Some are lengthy citing examples, some have meaning to the point, some have literal translation. Which one do you have?

And which script do you have the verses? English or Hindi or Sanskrit? Though this has nothing to do with your query, I would personally prefer to read it in my mother tongue.both, verses and translation. Just a choice.

The Gita in particular says about reading its chapters. Reading the whole Gita, reading half of it, reading quarter of it, reading a single chapter and reading about a single verse. Each of it has its own virtue.

My grandmom visited a temple daily early in the morning by 5:00 AM and after the initial pooja is done, all the devotees used to recite a chapter of The Gita daily. So, it was like 1 chapter a day without the translation. A few chapters have very few verses and a few have many verses(~50-60). So, the time taken each day for the Gita recital was not the same. Nevertheless, they continue reciting one chapter a day.

Now, how to read it? Everyone has their own way to worship God. Same applies to this as well. If you worship God daily, I presume you have a separate Pooja Room or a separate rack for the idols. We place our Gita here and after the daily routine pooja is done, The Gita can be read. How many? That is completely upto you. Depends on your interest and daily routine.

The Gita which we have has a few slokas from various upanishads. We recite them and start reading the Gita Verses. And Again at the end of each chapter, there are few other slokas which we recite. But this is just one way that my family follows.

There is another sloka that is to be read compulsorily at the end of each chapter, otherwise which the whole virtue of the read Gita is lost.

apart from that, there is no hard and fast rule to read The Gita.

Let me know if you need any further information.

    Dear Bharati,

I understand this is too late a response. I hope you have started reading the Bhagavadgita. As you have mentioned you bought it from ISKCON, it must be "Bhagavadgita As It Is" (Bhagavadgeethe yatharupa) written by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

At the outset, you must realize that you are very fortunate to read the Gita and thus come in touch with Lord Krishna. So, please remember this whenever you start reading the book.

You may also remember the following pastime of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and a poor brahmin.

Once, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was touring South India, he came across a poor brahmin in a temple. He was holding a Bhagavadgita and trying to read it. However, he was being ridiculed by all the other villagers because he was an illiterate and still trying to read the Gita. The brahmin ignored their ridicule and continued to intently look at the book.
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu observed this and asked the brahmin :
" Dear Brahmin, why are you trying to read the Gita although you are illiterate and you are being made fun of by other villagers?"

The brahmin replied " Dear Sir, I have been instructed by my spiritual master (Guru) to read the Gita although he knew that I am an illiterate. So, I am trying to read"

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was very pleased. But He noticed that the brahmin had tears in his eyes. So he asked " That is very good. But why do you have tears in your eyes?"

The brahmin replied " Dear Sir, I cannot read or understand the Gita. But when I see the picture of Lord Krishna as the charioteer of Arjuna, I feel moved by the Lord's love for His devotees. He loves His devotees so much that although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He even becomes the servant of His devotees. This touches my heart and so my eyes automatically fill with tears whenever i see this picture."

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu immediately embraced the brahmin and said " You have understood the Gita perfectly".

The above pastime does not mean that only caste brahmins can read the Gita. The knowledge of the Gita is for the entire human race. The essence is that, if one reads the Gita and tries to follow it in life, he/she will be blessed by the Lord.

Please try to read the Gita as much as possible, everyday. Nityam Bhagavata Seva. It is a spiritual service you will be rendering to Lord Krishna.

Devotion and a simple heart are the only requirements. No other hard and fast rules.

Please continue reading everyday, even after completing one reading, as your spiritual credits will be increasing as you read and our hearts get more and more purified.

Srila Prabhupada has given detailed lectures on each verse of the Gita. You can visit prabhuapadanugas dot org and hear them when you find time.

    Wishing you happiness always,
    Sugopi
