Dear fellow mothers, I would like to hear your experiences on using re-usable or washable diapers. I have a son, 3 years old and he was born in India. During my 3 months stay in India after delivery I used only our traditional style diapers (meaning stitched out of old cotton sarees) and also got some wrap-arounds for shops. I must have used disposable diapers only when we had to visit the doctor or wait at Passport office and during flight journey. My boy was born in summer, the maid servant washed the diapers by hand and we could dry them in bright sunlight (natural insecticide!). But since I moved back to Germany he has been on diapers and i'm on potty-training project... that's another story. In Germany we get lots of washable diapers in cotton, terry-towel material, disposable liners etc., all ocologically controlled and there is a great awareness to use them as opposed to disposable ones (Eco-friendly). And after reading lots about them I understand that babies on such diapers get toilet trained quicker because they can sense the 'wetness' always. As for costs they do seem to be expensive when you buy them first but i suppose when we calculate the diaper costs that we buy now n then it'll be the same if not cheaper. I'm expecting our second baby in June (again summer) and I don't think I mind washing the diapers. Please share your thoughts and what you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using such re-usable diapers in the long run... i mean when we go out, changing them etc., Thanks! LATHA

Thanks anooch. i should check for similar services here. I know that there is a paid laundry service for diaper washing.. they pick up and deliver and also use eco-products for sensitivie skin. Latha

    Latha,

I have a question here. My mom has got the cloth diapers which are available in India.
I tried it just once yesterday. But when it got wet, it did wet his clothes also. So the purpose of diapers didnt seem to work. Could you suggest something on this?

Actually Pavi, this is exactly what happens with Indian diapers and you need to keep the baby on a rubber/plastic sheet without any clothes on over his lower half to use these kind of diapers. This may not be possible in the middle of a a Finnish winter, so I think it may be better to just go with the disposables for now and try the cloth in summer. You could put plastic pants over the cloth, but in a newborn where you are changing every hour at the minimum that is simply too much work, dont you think?

Hi Pavi, I checked out washable diapers at the baby shop but unfortunately there were too many customers and i couldn't get any details. But looking at it they do seem thicker than the indian ones but i'm sure they'll also get wet and need constant changing. Since my baby is due in summer i'm thinking of this possibility. I also plan to talk to some mothers in my son's nursery and get their feedback. I'll keep posted. But as Vanathi says in winter better be not too optimistic and just stick with disposable ones. It saves trouble for both the mom and baby:) In summer, acc to my friend, just let them move around in a panty or something so they get used to that 'wet' feeling. BTW, we got a new toilet seat for my boy... something more colourful and better shaped than the earlier one and now he does no.1 himself in that :bowdown in summer when my parents are here they've agreed to take up the challenge of training for kakka also :crazy Latha

Very true Vanathi and Latha. He cries too much if his clothes are removed as probably he feels cold. So changing diaper is a big task for us.

As you said, its better I dont experiment anything till summer.
