This was during my tenure in BCBS. Usually the motto of the school was not to burden a child with too many home works. The child should be able to play and then finish a bit of study to have a well rounded development. But, being Maths I usually gave about 5 sums per day to ensure they knew their way around the subject being handled in the class.

I was fed up to my teeth with the excuses I had to often hear about the maths sums not being done. It would usually be “Ma’am, I have not done my home work because I forgot about it or I am sorry ma’am but I had to go out yesterday and please forgive me ma’am, I was not feeling well etc.” This was usually with a set of boys who were boarders and they would lead up to a fine song and dance about the daily homework.

I finally announced in the class one day that the person to give me an excuse that will have me stumped needn’t do the homework for about 1 week. This was for the boarders. Usually when I say this – it means hard practicals on their head is due, an assignment which consisted of slightly tough sums for weekends. My boarders took my bait and the next day all seven of them came with no homework done and gave me their excuses.

1st boarder – “Ma’am, I am sorry but yesterday my dog ate up the homework” – the reply was you are not allowed to keep dogs in the boarding so extra prep work.
2nd boarder – “Ma’am, you must understand yesterday I completely forgot about the homework, I think this is due to stress” (with a hopeful look) to this my reply was the amnesia trick has been played too many times.
3rd boarder – “Ma’am, please excuse me, I was asked to do the cleaning for the entire dorm and could not do the sums” the reply was the boys are never asked to clean the dorm, for that a person is employed.
So on and so forth it went on till the last boarder came up with the most amazing excuses.
7th boarder – “Ma’am, you must understand and not laugh at me, I was up in the terrace doing my maths sum, when suddenly the sky was filled with a bright light, very bright ma’am and then this light suddenly took me up and then when I finally remembered myself it was morning.” This was simply too much for me….UFO’s in Bangalore and that too in BCBS building, my laughter rang out loudly and needless to say young Roshan was allowed to go free and not submit his one week of home work.

    Aqua,
Very nice excuses.. and that too the 7th boarder...superb!
Atleast he could have asked the Aliens to do the home-workbonk

Keep posting such things, interesting to read the excuses, which we might use it for not job being done at homeBig Laugh
    Children are good at this....

One day, which was a Monday, my son don't want to go to school.
He gave us the excuse that he is having malaria and don't want to go.
Did you know where he got to know about 'malaria?
He was reading his 'Health' book the previous night.

    Hi Sri,

My tenure as a teacher in BCBS taught me never to underestimate the mind of tiny individuals. I call them my pint sized monsters with heart of gold. I loved your little one's prank.

    Warm wishes,
    Aqua.

    Dear mom,

You have shared all these stories with me. You have laughed out loud saying what little monsters i have in my class and you have also laughed out loud with the number of marriage proposals that i received from these same pint sized monsters. Remember the valentine roses that i used to recieve.
    hahahaha

    love
    Aqua.

    priya,

    I loved all the excuses..

when my DD was 2.5, we sent her to a a school nearby. she never liked to write then, and the home work that was given was :spin. My Mil used to write the homework. one day, had to go to the school, went and met the teacher, she told me you daughter told me that her Grandma does the homework, so why should I do...

Later we got transferred to delhi and she was asked to do kg again for her age factor..(kg only when you are 4 ..) I was saved.

These pint sized monsters with a heart of gold are so possessive of their teachers...
though out of topic...this is one incident that always remain with me...my DS when he was in 1std...was very hesitant to go to school for a week..everyday some excuse...that he was sick, he felt breathless...then he gave us an ultimatum ..he will not go to the class with malayalee classmates....then we thought there could be something wrong at school...(as his homework, grades everything was perfect..)
On going to the school and talking to the teacher we understood, that there was a new comer .a malayalee girl, who did not understand english, so the teacher had to talk in malayalam..and the girl used to go and hug the teacher and the teacher reciprocated...so DS felt that his teacher was giving hugs to her and not to him.?????...The teacher then called him and explained that the girl had a problem and we have to make her feel comfortable...

    Dear Sumeru,

Thanks for enjoying my piece. I call them my pint sized monsters because they were mine that time. They spent more time with me than at home. cause at home the best part of the time they were sleeping so i was given an opportunity to enjoy their antics and cherish them as they deserve. i will tell you sometime about how one of my little one set about embarrassing me in front of the whole school by singing me a special valentine song. i still laugh as i recall that memory.

    Warm wishes,

    Aqua.
