As we neared the gate of our complex ,my husband slowed down the car and I looked to see what happened. As my husband honked ,she looked at us, the most beautiful golden brown eyes that I had ever seen. I smiled at her and she snorted, irritated she gracefully got up and moved ahead followed by her litter.

I was so amazed by the aura around her.She couldnt speak but her eyes spoke volumes. This dog had amazing courage. The way they try and protect their kids, but being on street most of them meet with untimely death and its so sad to see the mother sitting nearby, the extreme pain evident in their eyes.

There were six litters on Sunday and by Friday they were reduced to just two. The watchmen of the society would try to save them by keeping them inside the complex but the pups would run out at the next available chance only to be crushed under some vehicle.

It was a Friday. My gardener was planting some saplings at the backyard.
Mid- july and I could see heavy clouds in the sky .Another rainy day , But hopefully no disaster . The previous year we had faced terrible situations during the monsoon due to the cloud burst . The thoughts sent ripple throught my spine.I asked the gardener to speeden up.As I was moving in I heard a whimper, something like a moan. The gardener called me and as I went out again,I saw a tiny pup. By then it began to pour and fast caught intensity. The gardener left immediately promising to come the next day. I stood at the door and looked around but couldnt locate the mother of this tiny pup.He was looking at me ,with the same golden brown eyes like his mother, wringing wet.

I thought at that moment it was only appropriate to take him home. Oh the kids were so excited . Muffin(MY Lhasa Apso) eyed him with a little envy, but did her usual routine work of sniffing him from all angles and then looking at me as though telling me that he hasnt detected a bomb!!

The kids got busy. The little pup had sent everyone into a frenzy. My house was unrecognisable after a few minutes and for someone like me who is a cleanliness freak that was enough to get my BP soaring, But todayI didnt mind.I let them do their Florence Nightingale thing. He was dried, powdered ,put in a huge plush cushioned cane basket after all the fruits seated in were thrown out. Given enough milk that would satisfy the hunger of an elephant. Pedigree was placed on a plate which he sniffed and though he was too small to have it Muffin ,who normally has to be coaxed to have it ,polished it in a matter of seconds. Such envy . I was angry When I gave her THE look ,she soon hid herself under the couch.

All this while I wondered where was her mother,I kept peeping out of the window but couldnt find her. Finally after dinner , When the kids had put the new arrival to sleep. we all retired to bed. After a couple of hours I heard a loud thud that woke me up.Thunder ,it was going to pour heavily. Schools might be closed tomorrow. Good in that case I could sleep for an extra hour . A loud Bang woke not only me , but my husband too. Now thats an achievement since hes a deep sleeper.(Kumbhkaran) thats what I often call him. Now thats surely not a thunder. Thats a loud bang at the door. I was worried as it was around 3 am , the time for robberies , thats what I had heard and there had been a spate of them during the last few months. Oh God!! yes they were robbers, Thieves with knives et al. I was very panicky. My Husband looked at me,"You Ok ??. Thieves dont knock and announce thier arrival" Ya he had a point. But then who was it. He said he'd check it out. As he switched on the light of the stairs,I called him,"I'l come along . You dont go alone You never know". He definitely looked very irritated with me but asked me to came along. Another loud thud , as we reached down and I could actually feel the door moving. Where the hell was the security. I'l fire him tomorrow, i thought. My husband reached to open the door and I stopped him, "Dont open the door .Lets see from the window first" . He agreed ,As I slid the window open,I was shocked to see this dog coming running towards the door with all her might to open it . She came searching for her only son. She had smelled him here, she knew he was here and didnt care a damn about the consequences. She looked so mighty she could take on the world at the moment. Her maternal instints made her this firece warrior. Just then I could feel something very cold touch my feet . This pup was licking my feet , telling me in his own way to open the door. My husband opened the door and the dog rushed in and it was one of the most memorable moments of my life to see their union. It bought tears even to my husbands eyes(he generally is of the opinion that men dont cry) But here emotions defied his stand. The golden brown eyes,of the mother, looked at me , this time there was a look of gratitude.
They left she was constantly licking him and he was jumping all over her . We watched as they left . I was over whelmed by her strength. Here was an animal , that was all alone ,unable to say anything but such fortitude, such powerhouse, such dauntlessness could ony come from the mother . The maternal power was so strong that such chutzpah could only be displayed by her.
I went back to bed ,but could'nt sleep. Sometimes when you discover such strong forces you are so awestruck that it lingers with you for a long time and this feeling lingered with both of us till morning. She showed so much of power at that time that she could have easily beaten even Undertaker the WWF champ.
The next morning I went to look out for them but couldnt find them any where. Infact after that day I never saw them but her memory still remains with me. Whenever I see the cane fruit basket ,I am reminded of the most powerful mother I have ever met.

    God Bless,
