WE have our education system, that is being ridiculed, cursed and sometimes just left alone saying that is going to change. gone are the days we had people all over the world say education and india :thumbsup..

Right now we as parents, are looking at the automated industry and ofcourse the most profitable one at that called education and schooling..

a friend of mine recently said shan, i have not paid this amount for my 4 years of engineering that i pay for my daughter's admission fees for lkg. but still i have my doubts and i am worried..

Now what i read in today's morning papers takes the cake...and i post it here verbatim,

Is you child tall enough to qualify for admission in junior KG? Maharaja Agrasen School has specific physical criteria for admission in JKG which includes a minimum height of 95 cm for a three and half year old while the weight should be between 15 kg and 20 kg. These shocking details have come out following a PIL filed in the court on the issue of malpractise in admission process in this school.

The school's policy of admitting the kids on these criteria has been questioned in a PIL filed by an NGO, Jagega Gujarat. The PIL has accused various private schools of violating a government circular and Supreme Court guidelines prohibiting interviews and granting admission to kids on basis of the draw system. School authorities have filed an affidavit and defended its practice. "To ascertain whether a child is physically and mentally fit for pre-primary sector, height and weight are measured and further mental alertness is checked as a thumb rule," reads the affidavit, adding that the school does not conduct interviews of children.

In a rebuttal, the petitioner NGO dubbed the criteria as wrong and submitted that if scientific approach is adopted, children having less height and weight are not necessarily deficient in mental capability as stated by the school. The petitioner also claimed that this is not permissible as per law.

It claimed that while granting admission in primary, the schools do not have a draw system, but select them for their pre-primary section only. Besides, these schools also reserve seats in trustees' quota.

The school has opposed these points saying that its trustees do not earn from school and often they donate to offset losses incurred by the school. Seeking dismissal of the PIL, the school stated that such accusations by NGOs might keep its donors away. Hearing on this issue is to take place on Thursday.

Now, what about those kids who are short by genetics, do they have some methods that they prescribe to increase their height.:spin

People donate to offset losses :rant who are they kidding.. wake up people, today people have lot of information on the click of the button..if the same people boycott these kind of schools, and also raise their voice against them, things may change..

but NO, we never do it, for fear of our child being targetted, losing his marks, and his future..

i know people who sit in the school the previous evening for the application form that is sold at 10.00 in the morning all for a good education (??)

No right to education act, or no educated people or awareness is going to help unless we take a step...

well open to discussion.....i am sure many of us go through this in the name of admission..

Re: conditions, criterias and school admission woes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Felt really shocking, knowing this criteria which is really very bad/sad part, as if, they are going to take kids for police/military training..hope, this criteria too will be exception for those who give donations. Not only this, even the other general criteria's like distance, age etc..are exceptional for recommandations/who has money, in other popular schools too. They will mention in their notice board that "Strictly no recommendations".But came to know that, they admit only the kids who has "powerful" recommendation and "Vitamin" money.

This is based on my experiance happend this year, for my kid's pre-kg admission.I came to know that, 60k is the donation in one popular school at nungambakkam last year. this year 1lakh.when i chkd with my friend she said, i can accept even if its 2 lak, as seats getting thr are difficult and people r standing in queue with money to get a seat thr. I was initially confused and made up my mind slowly n put him in a school nearby, which is not so popular but heard good one and paid 12 k for the whole year and i hope they/we, will bring my kid to good level.

yes, that was my first reaction was.. shocked and felt really bad at the new ways of filtering..

and i know which school, you are talking about..it is now kind of known thing..that is quite cheap..and do not feel bad or inferior that your son studies in a school that is not popular..many schools that are not so popular have known to produce extra ordinarily well groomed kids.. all the best for your kid..

And people like your friend are the ones who push the amount for building funds/school furniture fun high...(yeah these are the names that are given for that amount)

    shanvy,

    A good thread in deed!

    iam worried at this trend:(

My parents both of them are teachers in govt school.

My dad is a retired AEO and my mom is working as ateacher in a govt school.

From the information i get from my mom, Govt schools have all best facilities for the kids.

good teaching aids, having montesory way of teaching till class 5 and lots more.

when i spoke to my husband about putting my daughter in a govt school , he was not ready to risk his daughters chances of getting in to the IIMs or IITs

I feel that a major social change should happen prompting the public to extend support for Govt schools.

Also Govt schools / teachers should emphasise on bringing up properly groomed individual.

Ok, this height-weight thing is straight out discrimination. There are some general criteria to monitor these for medical reasons, but let's say a child has some disease or syndrome that affects height or weight - would this school refuse to educate her? And mental alertness without an 'interview' - how? A CAT/PET/FMRI scan perhaps?
You know, what with dowry deaths, female infanticide / abortions, the gora/i fetish and this sort of idiotic selection processes, I suspect we Indians would take to eugenics with rather greater alacrity than the Nazis did.
Having said that, this business of parents going crazy over admission for the kids into prestigious schools is common in the US & of course Britain as well - Manhattan & DC schools are famous for parents who plot the career trajectory for their kids starting from conception. European countries, especially Finland, are more egalitarian.
On a different note, what do these schools do with the 'donations'? Is there any way to access that information with an FOI request? Is it the case that the schools invest it (justifiably?) in education, buildings, facilities, student scholarships, teacher-salaries / training and whatnot or is it a profit making initiative for someone?
Sorry, I have been away from India for a long time - not aware of trends. Perhaps some parents with kids in such schools can enlighten me?

The TN government giving laptops and a very small fee and the great results has pushed a friend of the family to put his daughter in a semi-govt school.

though i agree, school does not matter, but schools today as promoted as brand equity, (i am sure there was this satirical movie the paatshaala, that brought this out ) at the end of the day parents are forced to succumb to the lure and the pressure..

also there are certain govt. schools that treat the kids like they are some dirt on the road (i have personally seen it happening) and we dicussed this in the indian education system thread too..

i am all for govt. schools or quasi govt. schools provided the school does help in the over all grooming..

infact i am convent educated while my dh is from a corporation school and we don't find much of a difference...
