    Dear friends,

I think we all remember the lines that used to describe the age at 40 and also at 60.

In Tamil we say that at 40 man/woman develops the qualities of the dog and at 60 years, the qualities of a ghost.

( naarpadhu vayadhil naai kulam, arubadhu vayadhil pei kulam)

    Why this is so?
May be this phrase relates to the meno-pause and chemical changes in the body makes us so.

To me this can also be counted and also by the experience we gain through the years, we act wisely (?).
to me I became 'me' only after 40, being an 'innocent girl' during my early years and became 'wise' for my age and people around me began to recognise me for what I am.
Maybe I didn't achieve anything,in particular, but I have enough courage to deal with some things in life and also, find time for myself at least and wise enough to say that I need rest at some point of the day.

I remember that in the TV they explained the above proverb as ' at the age 40 you should 'reduce' your intake of food and be healthy hereafter and it doesnt' mean you will 'bark' as the dog.
I think this explanation fits exactly what they wanted to convey.

OK what about for the age 60?
    can anyone explain?

    Dear Sriniketan

This proverb is only for men not for women. At 40 yrs, the sexual urge will raise for men and they always in need for sex and food for the next 15 yrs like that of a dog and if it is not available they will bark:bang. At 60 yrs, they will become erratic , never know when they will be angry, upset, laugh etc. if they are hungry they will consider it as thirst and drink from water to buttermilk to cool drinks to beer. If they are thirsty, they will start eating even in the middle of the night. but womenfolk are balanced and blessed ones. they know what to do & when to do.
    Regards
    Uma

    Dear Sriniketan
Why do they say in Tamil at 40 dog herd and at 60 ghost herd???
I liked your answer that we bcome more wise and take any decisions couragously:thumbsup
You are right at 40 we become much matured enough for it and become happy that we have achieved something or the other in life.
At 60 I think we are happy that whatever we wanted to do in life we have done it and is the life to enjoy the way we want as we have done enough for everyone like kids, DH, and relatives.
At 60 we are not ghosts!!!!!!!!!!! we will be cheerful senior citizens.
Ya ofcourse keeping in mind about the intake of diet healthy food.........
    Great topic:clap:clap:clap

    Dear Uma,
Really, does this proverb related only to men.
I was wondering what it meant.
:clap to women folks who are well-mannered and well -balanced in life.

Can we start a separate thread to note down the proverbs related to man, woman, children and in general...

    Aruna,
I am not able to correct my post. bonk

It is said like 'at 40---we develop the qualities of a dog and at 60---the qualities of a ghost'.

Sure we will be cheerful senior citizens because of our wise decision at 40, right?

    Dear Sriniketan
Good idea. But some of the proverbs abt women will look like male chauvinistic ones. if u look into its meaning u will be astonished.

    Hello Sriniketan,
    Another good thread from you…
All I can say is, the proverb might hold good in olden days and doesn't hold good for today's generation.
We women are more wise and courageous in all aspects.
We are taking care of our family very right now. (we are doing lot of hard work for the family)
When we are in 40's, I guess it would be less of physical work (as kids would have grown up and could take care of themselves).
We will have plenty of time for ourselves. We could just make good friends, do social service, go out for movies, shopping, beauty parlor, fitness centers and keep ourself happy and fit.
At 60's, I guess, all our hairs would have turned grey and will be busy coloring them.
Same thing with teeth and will be busy cleaning our artificial tooth set.
I am sure I would have become grand mom by that time and I want to help my sons, DILs and grand kids (if god permits) for their busier life.
And continue doing some social work (if god permits us with good health)
Just sit back and re-play all the memories ,enjoy life and wait for god's call.
    ~Punitha

    yes Sriniketan

One proverb in Tamil -- Bombalai siricha pochu; pugailai viricha pochu. Means it is bad if a woman laughs too much and the flavour of tobacco is gone when it is opened.
All these days I was thinking that this is a male chauvinistic expression abt woman. When I smiled and talked with my employees in lighter mood, they take me for granted and started a lethargy work. my profession - facility management - needs a perfection in every thing, is got affected. But when I wiped the smile from my face and became curt, things were started falling in place. They have got some fear and respect for me these days.
Looks like now only I understood the correct meaning of that proverb. We, women are the home makers to be frank deciding authorities of every thing, we have to be curt and strict in every thing.
    Regards

    Hi Punitha,
I accept your thoughts on this, 100%.

    On a lighter note,
Hairs turning grey with fallen teeth, may be we look like ghosts...hahaha!
