Cleaning silver and brass pooja items

Dear Mohana

Try using white toothpaste. I have just tried it and my God's are sparkling. Use a cloth or brush to dabble some tootpaste and brush it. It will shine!!!

Interested to know what others suggest. Will follow this thread.

 

Agarbathi dust

Hi Mohana,

I have religiously used "Vibhuti" or the dust that collects from lighting agarbathi to clean my silver items. It is kinda messy, but the silver shines real well. Give it a try!

Hi Mohana,

I use Comet to clean my silver pooja items( you can usually find it in American grocery stores). It makes the items look like new. However, I am not sure about how safe it is to use on silver items.....I use it very sparingly...during a big festival or pooja at home. If not, for regular cleaning I just use mild soap water.

Also to make the pooja items look like really new....after cleaning with Comet, apply silver polish (you can find these in grocery stores too). The polish will help you keep the tarnishes away for a longer time.

Shining silver

Dear Mohana,

Leo's idea of using toothpaste for cleaning silver is good. I have an extra clean tooth brush with soft bristles kept aside for that purpose. I also have jar of liquid polish for small silver and gold articles. I immerse them into this liquid, leave it for a few minutes and then scrub with a brush under running water and rinse. That works too. Store bought silver polishes work well on strongly soiled articles like oil lamps etc. Haggerty is one firm I can think of, there are many others. There is also a silver cloth you can buy which is used to clean away the tarnished articles, works better on a larger and smooth surfaces. So, there is a wide choice.
Thanks Vidya for your tip about using the ash from agarbatties. That is new to me. Sounds highly economical.....'Waste not want not'.

hi il,
give some idea to clean brass items also. i hv a brass jug which i use everday . sometimes i clean it with lemon, which takes too much time but no use . it truns black again :x . txs in advance.

Yes, Brasso is the answer to your brass problems! That is the first name that came to my mind, but there may be other brands too at your local Walmart or grocery stores. They work wonders on brass articles. Try it. But by the time your jug shines, you might have a good arm ache...don't say I didn't warn you)

txs for such a quick reply . but i don't know from where to get brasso coz i don't hv walmart near by . and here in china its very much difficult to get all this stuff . i add this in my shopping list for india . by the time any home remedy for this without armache ???

I am so sorry, did not realise you were from China. O wow. China..You should write about your life there. Are there many Indians there and how is life? I am curious and would love to know.
So no Brasso in China? Although I recently saw a documentary about Walmart being the biggest and fast growing supermarket in China!! Maybe it is not there where you live. Hmm...let's see if anyone else has other ideas to shine brass. But be warned, even with a polish, polishing a brass article does need a lot of arm muscle
