    Hi ILites,
I am not sure if this is asked in the forum before. But I was wondering about this from many days. When there is a death or new born in the family we do not light deepam in front of God or do any puja. For that matter we dont even put Rangoli in front of our houses. Why?

    Regards,
    Vidya

    Hi devotee,

I think they may say it as "Theetu" in Tamil. For death sure they wont till 16 days. For new born im not confirmed of it. Should do some rituals and then continue regular poojas in home. Keep posting in IL!!!! Your contributions are valuable!

    Fine tuning the above,
Birth Theetu is for 10 days and similarly
Death Theetu is for 10 days also
(In some cases its 13 days and in other cases its 16 days)
Depending on the Varnas...this is enumerated in Dharma Sastras

    Thanks and regards

I have heard that the house needs a shudhikaran (cleansing and purifying) after incidents like death or baby born take place. In most communities it is 13 days for death and 6 days for birth.

Special pooja is conducted for this ritual before a diya can be lit.During this period, in our custom, we do not do pooja, we do not stitch, or cut hair /nails and also observe vegetarian.

The Shudhikkaran is known as Punyaha Vaasanam...as per vedic rituals, which can be done with Vedic Pandits.
But not exactly 13 or 6 days.. but on the day auspicious fixed by the Pandits according to varnas...
thanks for allowing me to post here....

According to Vedic Samskarars, when a person is affected with "Theethu", the malefic combinations of the planets creates -ve energy. Hence, its not advisable to go to temples as enumerated in the sastras

Thank you for some explanation. For some communities, the ''theethu'' for birth and death takes up to a month!

Re: Why do we not light deepam for God when there is a death or new born in the famil

I heard that during death/birth a portal opens for spirits to travel back and forth from spiritual plane to material world. This happens again during shrada/pitra paksha. and when this portal is opened deity leaves the house/planet earth so that this travel can happen without problems( Deities have far more stronger energies then spirits and in their presence spirits can not come (at least not easily). Thats why we wait for this portal to close and do cleansing and then invite Gods in our places.
