swaran only one suggestion..if you change the hold on the powder, the lines will not be flat, they will be more precise and sharp..hold the powder in your hand like it is a pinch of it that you are holding..

i love sikku kolams..and i drew the whole month of margazhi..but never had the momentum to click pictures..i have a 4x4 area in front of my apartment..that i used to draw, it was actually an exercise for myself..to draw them bending and not sitting..at 5.30 in the morning ...just trying to reminisce the good old days of drawing and adding those pumpkin flowers..

right on the floor a?? swaran, you are fantabulous... no words to praise you..
yeah.. i'll try.. patient is very important..
one doubt, do you draw like if you start from one point, you finish the whole or you draw part by part?

for eg. in this kolam, initially we will draw the middle squares, then what you did?

sorry for bugging you.. but really I want to know.

thanks a lot shanvy foir the suggestion...will surely try and post my feedback :)
yes very true its really an exercise but i really try to draw by bending but little uncomfortable and also lot of pain..hehehe,,,small ones i ll try :)
thanks a lot...lovely to know about your kolam experience too :-D
thanks a lot sabari..do try and post your creations...
no no,def you are not bugging at all..its a pleasure to explain the new entusiastic kolam creators...to answer your q,i would say it depends on the pattern...few days i finish one side and then go to the next side and finally the middle part...few days i draw the easy curves that i am able to spot on the pattern like square or a repeating patter and then go for joining all these...few days i see the lines and however the lines go i ll follow the line...i mean if a specific line in that sikku kolam goes all the sides,i ll go the same way complete and take the next line...hope i have not confused you :-D

    Swaran,

When we were kids, me and my sister used to draw kolams, especially during Margazhi as there was stiff competition from our neighbours. (There were 4 sisters and their mom too joined them) All were normal kolams, not the neli kolams. Neli kolams were my sister's forte. She used to draw real complicated designs. Enakkum neli kolathukkum romba dhooram :bonk[Me and Neli Kolams were not made for each other.] My problem was that I could not decode the complex twists and turns in those.:hide: But, seeing your Neli kolams inspired me to draw Neli Kolams using multiple simple designs. I've begun to copy your simple-complex neli kolams to my drawing note.:)

And believe me, this inspiration helped. Last week, we had a competition in our office wherein we were required to draw neli kolam. Me, who had never had a tryst with neli kolam, went ahead, searched for designs, decoded it, doubled it (to qualify conditions for the competition) and drew it with a team. When I showed the final result to my mother, she was so very much surprised that I could draw that. For that matter, even I myself was surprised that I could do it. All thanks to you.

All photos of the very few kolams that I drew for Margazhi this year are still in my mobile. Yet to upload them.:hide:. Will do so soon and share them here.

I made this kolam for Pongal. It was a grand celebration even though, the Pongal Pot was out of shape :rotfl
