Married life is not fair to all women. In spite of one’s best efforts to have a nice relationship with the husband, some women land up in single lives. The reasons can be many and are beyond the scope of this discussion. Having to lead the life as a single mother is probably is a huge challenge for any woman. Most women in such a situation , withdraw into a small space in the society, live a life an introvert, doing the barest necessary things to keep their kids survive. But, some women, after becoming single, get extra-ordinary courage and do something special to the society in which they live. Examples of such women can be many in India. In every City of India, you can come across lady lawyers, who are single themselves (after failed marriages), giving legal advices to similar women free of cost. Like that , there can be many examples in every field.

But, what is noteworthy is an Indian woman from A.P, did something extra-ordinary
after her migration to U.S. Married life was a misery to her , forcing her to get
separated and lead the life of a single mother. But, instead of getting withdrawn from
the society, she became a hero by doing the following : Here is her story : Vijaya
Emani was born at Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh to Indu Rani and G. Venkataramana
Reddy and she was a meritorious student at every level of her education. She made
her way to the United States in 1986 after graduating in engineering from Osmania
University in 1980 and later received her M.S. degree in Computer Science from
    Cleveland State University.

With her marriage ending in divorce, she overcame personal struggles to bring up her
daughters with the help of her mother. Vijaya came to the forefront of the Indian
community, first working with the Northeast Ohio Telugu Association, then with the
Federation of Indian Community Associations and with Greater Cleveland Asian
    Community later.

She initiated single-parent support groups and opened discussion about immigrant
domestic violence. An advocate of women's empowerment and community
involvement, Vijaya rose to be a civic leader to one of the largest minorities in the
city of Cleveland. She worked to help set up the India Cultural Garden in 2002 and
installation of Gandhiji's statue in 2006.

Her work for the betterment of similar Indian women in US was so great that U.S
President Barrack Obama, honored with the second highest Presidential Award of
USA to her. (She died in a road accident and the award was given to her daughters
    posthumously, by U.S President).

“Breaking long-held taboos, Vijaya Emani lent her voice to protect Indian-American
women from domestic violence,” Mr. Obama said while presenting the nation's
second-highest civilian honour to Emani's daughters -- Sujata and Nirmala -- in the
East Room of the White House on Thursday, 20th October 2011. Mr.Obama also
added, “She was a trailblazer who shared her personal story to help other battered
    women overcome abusive relationships”

End of a marriage is the end of every thing in life to most women. But, here is an
example, where Mrs.Vijaya Emani proved that ‘what appears as the end may really
    be a new beginning”….!

This thread is a tribute to that great woman………………..meant to inspire similar
women, in India and abroad, who may be thinking that every thing is over to them,
simply because their marriage is over.

Every one of us, can feel proud of her.....! She has made History...!

    Dear IG,
Please do not think that women keep weeping after a getting a divorce , could be tears of joy and relief!! Or they could be regretting the wasted years .:thumbsup
They certainly dont weep for the ex hubby !
Every ending is a beginning no doubt. When God closes a door he opens another.
Basically I dislike calling a woman bechari (poor thing) , just because she is divorced .
All divorced women are strong , think of it this way , they would rather walk out than stay in comfortably in an abusive marriage with a rascal, /cheater etc.:bowdown
P S - This is not to belittle Mrs Emani in an way.
IG , thanks for inspiring threads , maybe it will inspire abused women to decide for themselves. There are plenty of divorced women in our country who have made a life for themselves and their kids.

Why is a divorce called a failed marriage for a woman?
Why brand divorce as a failure in life ???
It can be a bad marriage but failure ?
This type of negative branding forces many wifes to endure atrocities and even think of suicide to escape this tag.
    Very regressive.
PS Please let us know about brave men who survived failed marriages , food for another thought provoking thread.

Yes, flowerlady. You are absolutely right. The tears after a divorce can be tears of joy and relief..! A divorce can be an event , ten times happier than a marriage with an abuser.

    You said it right...! :)
