Did I ever possess one of those beautiful BSA ladybirdzzz, Miss India, Miss Whatever...??? tsk... Have I ever ridden one for the sake of it??? tskI was not even able to tame it in an open ground..:spin My limbs unlearnt the inborn trait of pedaling a bicycle every time I attempted it.

My first attempt was as early as I was in 2nd standard, when my sisters went out for the adventure. They hired one from one of those cycle shops for 3 hours and Lo at the end of it, both were masters.. i mean mistresses.. That was easy or so it looked to me then. Sat on the machine with 2 wheels, no rear break, only front break, no bell and without even my knowledge it started moving and in 30 seconds took a big U turn and both of us were on ground..My cousin who was the tutor told me that I was too young and can give a try next year.. Going back to tricycle was not a bad idea at all.. :-D

After years, one of my friends started coming to school on her new bike and all my friends thought I could definitely do it. This time even I concluded I can do it. :bananaI mounted her bike independently just with the usual moral support from my buddies. It was a smooth ride strainght down the big school field, took a wide left.. came all over again to the starting point and again..until I encoutered human intervention. A cricket ball came rolling from somewhere, that wasn't the matter.. someone was fiercely following that ball and I started hearing multiple voices from a distance...turn left.. you'll hit him... turn right.. no.. right..left..thud !*&%$... there I was on the ground and the bicycle mercilessly resting on me unhurt!! :crazy

There were no more attempts for some years as my sisters had stopped taking their bikes out and 1 was even sold. The other 26" one was waiting for me to throne in some day. :coffee

That day did come!! This time, I ventured it all alone. Pushed it all the way to the nearby playground. Some legendary had said 'Cycling never gets easier.. you just go faster..!!' With this in mind, I mounted my bike again in the dim light of early morning.. the orange colored sodium vapoured lamps confirmed me that there was no one around playing cricket this time. I started pedaling it faster and faster and yes it really worked... I was in complete balance and moved towards the dimmer side of the playground even more faster....and something happened suddenly.... I closed my eyes and squeaked for 10 seconds...when I opened my eyes, I could see my bike going smooth and straight..and wait...where am I??? I wasn't seen on the seat.. :hide:
I shook my head sideways and came to my senses to find out that I had met a rope which was tied to demarcate the Kabaddi arena for next days' match and was totally invisible in orange colored light and it hit my neck to stop me there and let my bike alone to pass through!!!!!! Went back pushing that bloody thing home and rested for 7 more days unable to move my neck in any direction..

Do you think I ever ventured it out again.. no way..I ditched it royally and started with my white scooty years later to be successful on two wheeled creatures. :cheers

Ha ha MM. Hilarious reading about your adventures with the bicycle. I had similar experiences with a 4 wheeler, and have never tried driving one ever since. May be I shall learn to fly. :)

A lovely piece of writing. Reminded me of my own cycling days. Swimming days. Driving days. Each one posed a barrier that seemed insurmountable at the time. I think driving was the worst. I realized that I was more comfortable driving on reverse gear than I was driving forward. The thing was that reverse gear didn't call for gear change. So, that terrifying clutch didn't come in to scare you! You were done with just a one time clutch pressing. But these inspectors refused to give me a license despite my remarkable acumen with reverse gear driving. Yet these same idiots would take there children to circus shows and even pay to buy tickets to watch a clown or two riding a cycle on reverse. Of course, I never tried the reverse technique on a bicycle or a cycle with a single wheel either. And I don't suggest that you try either. But no harm wanting to try you know.

    Love.

    Dear MM
You have indeed touched upon the greatest riddle of life. Before I tell you about it, I must tell you of a nice ad that is doing the rounds on TV now. A young mother will be talking with a friend or whoever of hers on the phone. At that precise moment, her tiny tot takes his first steps towards her. The young mother rushes to her child just to catch him in time before he loses his balance. This is about the only trick a human can learn on his own, I mean balancing himself on two legs. Two wheels are more complicated than two legs and to master them, we need external help for an eternity. I can totally empathize with your tryst with your bicycle.

Whenever I go to a circus, I do not care much for the artist who puts his head inside the wide open mouth of a lion. He just leaves me unmoved but when I see a young girl going round the arena on a monocycle (I hope this is what they call a cycle with a single wheel), my eyes open in great wonderment and I clap my hands like a child much to the chagrin of my wife, daughters and grandchildren!

I know that God has denied me the talent of being able to ride a bicycle without falling every 100 meters. I feel great to see a kindred soul in you, MM!

    Dear MM
What a delightful adventure you had. The timing, early morning, is just perfect.

The one troubling thought that I came back was the rope tied at your throat level. After reading that particular piece, I was thinking how it must have hurt you. Ouch!

Glad you got yourself promoted from bicycle to the twowheeler which treated you much better than the bike.

Your thread made me recall my attempts too! :)
    Enjoyed it much
