Philosophy

I am reading a book called " The Story of Philosophy " by Will Durant.I picked up this book from the Book Fair held in Jaipur, and it sure is very interesting. It contains philosophy by the greats of yester years like Aristotle,Plato,Voltaire and others. Some things they have said and beleived are very controversial for todays times, but i will quote the selected parts, and u all judge for yourself.

I am neutral.I am just writing what I have read in the book.Something interesting, may not be to the likings of the ladies here, dont give me the brickbats if any, give it to these great philosophers. So here we go.

Aristotle - on Marriage and Education - page 83-84

Woman is to man as the slave to the master, the manual to the mental worker, the barbarian to the Greek.

Woman is an unfinished man, left standing on a lower step in the scale of development. The male is by nature <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Superior,and the female inferior. The one rules and the other ruled.

Woman is weak of will, and therefore incapable of independence of character or position. Her best condition is a quiet home in which, while ruled by the man in her external relations, she may be in domestic affairs supreme.

The courage of a man is shown in cammanding, of the woman in being commanded.

Health is more important than love .Further it conduces to temperance not to marry too soon. For women who marry too soon, are apt to be wanton, and in men too the bodily frame is stunted.

    Schopenhauer - page 342 -

How absurd it is to give property rights to women !All women are , with some exceptions, prone to extravagance, because they live only in the present, and their chief outdoor sport is shopping.Women think it is men’s business to earn money, and theirs to spend it.

I am of the opinion that women should never be allowed altogether to manage their own concerns, but should always stand under actual male supervision,be it father, husband or son,or the state,as is the case in Hindoostan, and that consequently they should never be given full power to dispose of any property they have not themselves acquired.

The less we have to do with women, the better. They are not even a necessarty ‘evil’.Life is safer and smoother without them.Let men recognize the snare that lies in woman’s beauty, and the absurd comedy of reproduction will end.

    PLATO

If we get good results (page 36) in breeding cattle selectively, for qualities desired, and from breeding only the best in each generation, why should we not apply the same principles in the mating of mankind ?

No man or woman shall procreate unless in perfect health.a health certificate is to be required of every bride and groom.

Men may reproduce between 30 and 45,women only above 20 and under 40.Men unmarried till 35 are to be taxed till felicity(God knows what it means )

Offspring born of unlicenced marriage,or deformed, are to be exposed and left to die.

Before and after the ages specified for procreation, mating is to be free, on the condition that the foetus is to be aborted.

The best of the either sex is to be united with the best as often as possible, and the inferior with the inferior.

Our braver and better youth, besides their honours and rewards, are to be permitted a greater variety of mates, for such fathers ought to have as many sons as possible.

This is just a part of the book. These guys have their views on politics, and other things, a very interesting reading, but maybe controversial for today.

You guys and gals judge, and leave me out of it.

U know Kamalji,While reading this, the only thing I felt was, probably these great Philosophers lived in an Era of Male Superiority and as a Human Mind behaves typically due to the External Factors around, they mite have landed up writing this.

All I can say is,these people write what they see from their point of view.Infact any person talks/Writes from their point of View and hence I let them enjoy their World of Blockage bonkhehehe

thats y they are gr8 philosophers

if one could not understand a woman properly he turns into a philosopher and still tries to understand woman bonkotherwise they would have done something more useful than just making philosophies............

so ultimately one need not be a philosopher to understand what a woman is........... once he understands he becomes a gr8 huMAN.
