Thanks Chithra mam, Shanthi, Vysan, and Aruna for your posts!

Even though English has been my second language, I for some reason experience this cartoon-like effect when I am reading something or hearing someone, anything that looks/sounds wrong just pops out …as in bugs bunny’s eyes popping out or Sunday cartoons with caption with that “think cloud” bubble... Most often than not, it is amusing at the end of the day to see how people’s minds work when they speak/write. These little quirks make it more fun to be around them I guess but it just boggles me how one goes without noticing the little things they do differently than others.

I hear colleagues say something like “he don’t want to go to lunch…” or “I wants to have lunch…” even though they hear “he doesn’t…” and “I want..” numerous times a day...I am guessing it must not sound wrong to their ears when they say this and never catch the right way when others say it…may be they know it’s wrong but that’s how it comes out anyways…from my personal experience…I am a gujju and gujjus have hard time pronouncing ‘Sh’ and instead make do with 'S'…my family does not have this problem so I can pronounce both 'Sh' and ‘S’ appropriately. However, since we are so used hearing the substituted ‘S’ sound in everyday gujarati that it is natural for me to speak like that too while talking to other gujjus even though I know that’s not how it should be…this is because it just sounds wrong to my ears for one…and the other is that gujjus look at me like I am the one mispronouncing (we are mocked for being right)…one good thing is that I have not adopted to this habit in speaking English…otherwise most people won’t know whether I am saying “she” or “see”…now that would be a bigger dilemma!!!

    Hello Vib
Yes Vib what you say is right, but what can you do we have to be with them right. In case we go to change them you know very well what will be the answer. So let us all be happy with 'she' and 'see' This is really a big dillemma. hahaha

    Dear Divs,
Yet another common wrong usage is "able to".
People say " I can able to do it "
When they repeat such usages to you, we tend to get confused !
    The other eternal mistakes are
    practiSe (verb) & practiCe (noun)
AdviSe (verb) & adviCe (noun )
The past perfect tense is very often "murdered" heartlessly !
Don't be surprised if I come back in this thread again !
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Chitvish,

Pastu Perfectu Tensea...... You are making me tensed.... I always get confused with this advise/advice....

Edhellam, namakku othu varadhu.... I had a Branch Incharge, working with me, who used to say, "What do can I"... Similarly... "Sir, I agree with you fully, but..".... When you agree, then where is the "But"...:idontgetit:.

    Sorry, Difficult Game!!!!:spin:spin.....

    Dear Veda,
I had the least intention to "tense" you up with past perfect "tense" !
Being an old timer, I was brought up on a strict dose of Wren & Martin, which I just used to adore. But still, only writing was easy, speaking was a real struggle till I joined College.
Relax, Veda, no more adviCe from me as to how to practiSe English-writing correctly !
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Hi all,

This discussion just reminded me one person in the college office, who used to find it difficult to talk in English, but like in the movies, he would like to show off, one day when we were walking on the verandah, he just asked us all "Why are you rotating on the verandah....(this is exact translation of suttaradu i suppose...) still it has remained fresh in my mind. Sorry for deviating.....

    Dear Chitvish,

You remind me of my eldest sister... When she was shifted fromTamil medium to English, She had a huge difficulty... She used to study in tamil, translate to english and then write... She worked really hard to become proficient in English... May be I didn't have that experience... So I didnt learn it properly....

Come on.... If you are not going to advise, who else is going to....

    Love
