    Dear chinju

Skanda shasti means trimph of lord Subhramanya over the evil sura padma. The son of lord Siva killed the demon sura padma with his holy spear(vel) and brought relief and joy to the suffering demi Gods and humanity.

Allegorially the vel represents Jana sakti(Power of wisdom) of the lord. Sura padma the demon of ego and ignorance with in us. Lord subhramanya is hence considered to be the personification of wisdom itself.

The five days prior to skanda shashti are days of severe austerities for the devotees of Muruga. The day after skanda shshti is celebrated as Deva sena Kalyanam.

Kanta Shasti Vratam is observed once a year in the month of Aippasi (October-November) starting from the pratamai the 1st phase of the brightening moon.

During the six days of Kanta Shasti, devotees, usually fast. They fast in many different forms: some devotees take only one meal a day and that single meal is the evening meal; to some that single meal consist of fruit and milk; others forego all solid foods, even abstain from taking medication take only a liquid diet; some even forego the liquid diet. Of the above forms taking milk would defeat the purpose of clearing long stored fat. Not taking any liquids could be harmful, as many unwanted matters tend to remain in the body. The ideal form of fast would be that during all six days and nights to abstain from all solid food and even medicine but take water, coconut water, strained orange juice and or such permissible liquids. These liquids help to flush out unwanted substances and to clean the body.
At the end of the six-day fast the body is indeed cleaner than it was before. The mind is cleansed by the pilgrimage, meditation, worship and other devotional activities. A pure mind in a pure body is a sublime combination and conducive to realizing the Divine. This is the reward and benefit of Kanta Shasti Vratam.

This is celebrated with great eclat in temples, especially in the six places sacred to Muruga (aaru padai veedu, in Tamil) - Tiruchendur, Tirupparankunram, Pazhamudir solai, Palani, Swamimalai, and Tiruttani.

recite the glory of Lord Muruga from one of the six scriptures in His praise, namely: Tirumurukarruppadai, Kandar Kalivenba, Kandar Anubhuti, Kandar Alankaram, Kanda Sashti Kavacam and Kanda Puranam.

Sattiyila irundha agapayil varum( this proverb is mostly misunderstood like only if something is there in the vessel it would come in the spoon) actually the proverb means if u follow sashti viratham ( it comes twice in a month) one would concieve.

    sashti viradhamirundhal agapai(uterus) il varum.

those who cannot keep sashti viratham everymonth can keep this kandha sashti viratham.

    regards
    vidyasundar

    Dear VidyaSundar
Thanks for explaining this so well to us. I am so impressed by your eloquence. In our local temple we celebrate Kanda Shasti and have puja and cook and serve food.

Thanks Vidya for explaining Kanda shasti vratham nicely. The last explanation on the proberb was really something I have never thought it to be interpreted this way. But we all know that ladies observe shasti vratham for conceiving, but how well it is hidden in that well known proverb .
