Work life style everything is challenging here. I'd say if you are living in a developed country continue to live there than in India.

    Dear all,

I have been reading the posts here and thanks for sharing your views and experiences.

I left India with the mind-set that I'll be returning after a couple of years. Now, I've lived in the US for the past 5 years and I'm scared of returning to India, to put it mildly.

First, the education system. I remember learning tables when I was in UKG. Now my 5 year old daughter has just started to learn and that too on my DH's insistence. Do I want to push my daughter to learn so much at an young age? I know I did and so did a lot of us. After all a lot of people return to US to do their MS so what's wrong in continuing K-12 and college here? Please share your thoughts.

Second, the people! This has been repeatedly discussed here. Friends and family are never the same once you live abroad. Especially those who don't have children in S/w engg. They seem jealous and automatically think you make millions here (like Sivaji movie!). They dont have to help but at least can not show the "you have a lot of money" attitude.
    :idontgetit:
The second part of the "people" aspect is competition. For anything and everything compete.. with class mates, friends, neighbours, cousins.... It takes away the peace. You join the rat race thinking if you don't, you'll lose out, especially in the case of your children's education/extra-cirricular.

Third, cleanliness.. oh yeah.. spit on the road, dirt on either sides of a narrow road. trash everywhere.. hmmm.... i cant tolerate this.. let alone my children.

Fourth, Traffic. Seriously, people who learnt driving in the US, do you think you can drive there?! Are you game to drive on the platform?! Do you know if the scooterist in front of you will turn right or left or just stop in the middle of the road? I just dont know how its going to look when TATA's Nano comes out!

Fifth, Lifestyle. I was telling my DH that one thing I will definitely miss is Bounty! I know Chennai has changed a lot since I left it but I would probably be paying twice the amount I pay here for a roll of Bounty!

    Positives I can think of..
    1. Maids/drivers/cook/watchman. You have people to do things for you for a reasonable price
    2. Restaurants.. hmmm... tasty (Indian) food for lower prices when and wherever you want it.
    3. Mom's house. You want a break? Just go with kids and spend a relaxing weekend.. stretch your legs and gossip about family/relatives/TV programs while your mom makes your favorite snack or better still, dinner!

Ladies, please share your thoughts. Your assurances would help me overcome my fear.

I have logged my experiences in my blog

Not sure if we are allowed to post links here but thought I can share my experiences..

I am going to complete 4 yrs after I r2i'ed its been a great journey. Yes, there are days when its not rosy and each day is different but at the end of it we asked ourselves 'is it worth it?' and truthfully its a big YES.

We hardly think about US these days except electronics or if a friend of ours asks us if we want anything from US. Its going to be 1 year since we moved to our new home and loving it.

I still keep thinking if there is anything I miss and its probably the greenery and the wide open spaces. But even that is compensated for us by visiting resorts and other places like Bangalore, Coimbatore etc. All said and done the feeling of loneliness or depression does not arise for me here and that is very important for me. My kids go to Sunshine and are quite happy there. Right mix of education and extra curriculars. Recently my kids participated in Sunshine school annual day at Music academy and they did a very good job. If kids are happy so are we!

P, I feel that it is all in our approach and acceptance. glitches, and -ves are always going to be there. the heat right now makes me :drowning:drowning the sudden spurt in temperature..

your new home, just curious where and have you done your woodwork. whom did you use. can you share details in the housing thread..

Just wanted to know is it because of the people around, the environment or is it that you are close to relatives. yeah i know that your kids are in sunshine..and i have recommended the school to two of my friends' based on your review..
