    Hi Neesha,
Nice to see your pictures on Maavilakku. It is feels very good to see how our people follow our custom wherever they go, with the avaialble resources.
We also do in Purataasi month, but with rice flour, jaggery mix with cardamom powder and ghee. I made vadais and kesari alongwith fruits for the Lord.
yeah it is a good idea to have the pictures taken so that we can refer to it whenever a doubt arises.

Hi Vandhana, surely we are happy to see our Lord that way. Do you have Maavilakku during the Annamalai Deepam?

    Hi Sriniketan and ladies,

Noticed this thread only now. What a divinr experience! Sri- you and family are truly blessed to have the Lord as an Agnijyoti in your blessed house.

Can anyone give me more details on

    1) when is mavilakku done?

    2) For which Gods? Is it done for Sastha/Ayyappan?

    3) Composition/recipe of maavilakku?

    4) Why is it done for God?

(I ask question 4 because we do maakaappu for our kuladaivam. I recently learnt that it is applied as a cleansing pack, to rid the Idol of all the grease and oil accumulated over a year of abhishekams).

    Thank you
    regards
    Vidya

    Hi Vidya,

Here let me write what I know about this.

    1. We can put Maavalaku as per our family tradition. In mymother's house we used to put on "puratasi saturday". Usually many people put at this time. Other occations are Navarathri, Aadi and Thai Fridays and any special day as per their habit.

    2. For Perumal/Govinda, Ambal. Yes even for Iyappa poojas they used to put. Have you gone to 'Samayapuram'? Their, many put 'maavilaku' on their eyes , chest and stomach. It is a prayer.they put maavilaku after they relived from pain or some disease. Even in 'Vaideesvaran Koil' they put like that.

    3. Here is my recipe for 'maavalaku.'Ingredients :
    Rice - 2 cups Jaggery - 1 cup Cardamom - 2 (optional) 4 -5 tab sp ghee
    Method :
Wash and soak the rice for 10 minutes. Drain well and spread on a white cloth. Grind the rice in a mixer a little at a time and seive.
When all the rice is ground, mix with powdered jaggery and cardamom. On a plate shape this dough in to the shape of a lamp or villakku.
we light a lamp after preparing a thick dough like chappati dough, by pouring ghee.

4.I dont know about why it is done. I think i answered all your questions:-D
